Here comes a million years of shame but to this day, I have no idea what the Cadbury Gorilla film is about or what it means.

No one knows what it means! But it’s provocative! It gets the people going!

Your comment: much better than the ad itself

Some shit just makes you happy, it raises your spirits for no particular reason. It doesn’t necessarily have to be deep, it just has to be fun. It can be silly, without being serious.

‘Gorilla’, ‘Eyebrows’, eating Cadbury’s chocolate, they just give you a little lift and make you smile.

A chocolate bar won’t change your world, but it might brighten your day... just for a few minutes.

It’s hard to remember what the ad environment was like 10 years ago, but this was absolutely breakthrough work at the time. So many views, so many awards, so much press. It’s weird that so many people in this chain are hating on it now rather than trying to replicate its success. Anyone would be thrilled to have this in their book and it would surely lead to better jobs, more money, etc. Overthinking things is poisoning our once gut-led industry.

For me it’s the pinnacle

It’s about feeling, not meaning. It’s a good example of how British advertising can still get away with being wacky while so much American advertising has become data-driven, over-tested and painfully straight.

like

It was effective. Sales went up. It was incredibly creative and well-executed advertising. What else matters?

like

Same. I still think it’s a scam being played on me by the entire industry

It's about a Joyful feeling. Nothing else. Like eating chocolate, metaphorically speaking.

I mean BMW’s brand essence is the joy of efficient dynamics which is the most German thing of all time. It’s not “ultimate driving machine.”

I’ve been told that the “strategy” - or at least the guiding thought - was “Cadbury is a surprisingly good experience”, and the creatives tried to embody that thought.

I think they did an amazing job of it.

He actually had the idea first then the Cadbury brief came in (more or less chocolate beings joy, like you said) and he presented it and fought for it. Pretty interesting backstory I looked up thanks to this post.

Why does a rabbit leave eggs for children to find in honor of a messiah who died and rose from the dead after a couple days? Why does a gorilla play Phil Collins?

Favorite ad of all time. But I was a kid at the time in the U.K. and was just ... joyful. Still eat dairy milk fruit and nut to this day. #hatersgonnahate

It’s a moment of joy - just like eating chocolate

It’s... funny?

Ish

“In the Air Tonight” is a painfully long song that everybody loves for that one cool part. Cadbury is like that part. And all of us are the 🦍.

"The creative idea for the campaign is founded upon the notion that all communications should be as effortlessly enjoyable as eating the bar itself. For ‘Glass and a Half Full Productions’ is a production house that exists solely to create content that makes you feel as if you’ve just eaten a bar of Cadbury Dairy Milk. A production house that makes things that make you smile. “

YouTube!

From stories I’ve heard the guy who pitched it had been wanting to do a gorilla playing that drum part for a long time and just kept pitching it for brand after brand until someone bought it. Who knows if it’s true?

The thing is, you still know what the ad was for (Cadbury). Most random loose-concept ads like this you don’t.

It’s not even funny. There. I said it. You can all speak freely now.

Who said it’s supposed to be funny? Both in reference to the ad and GSD1’s love life.

Loose brief and meh execution. It's fun, but doesn't wow. To the gcds and ECDs out there, is this seen as really good work?

I seriously want to see your book

like

Not much to add - it’s the feeling of eating chocolate visualized - but for years, the tagline for Dairy Milk was ‘a glass and a half of milk in every half pound’, and I always liked the reference to the past.

Anybody here work in Canada? Specifically Vancouver? The cost of living here is outrageous, and I feel like I don't have a fair compensation. Our company doesn't give out yearly inflation raises, so I feel like I'm falling behind. Is this fair, or should I be going after more?
