Here’s some shit: I’m staff level (career change, so a few years older than most staff). My 19 yo stepchild got laid off temporarily from their skilled trade job and is able to draw unemployment. They still live with their mom and I provide their healthcare as the stepmom married to their father. Stepchild just got first unemployment check and is making 2x their normal pay. Making more than me (!) while I continue to provide their health insurance. What. the. actual. fuck.

My nail tech is *bringing home* $1k/week on unemployment. She hopes the shut down lasts through the summer. 🙅🏽‍♀️

These people are making a large amount, for them, for a short period of time and the extra unemployment money won’t last forever. They don’t have healthcare or the ability to save for retirement the way the employed do. The system isn’t perfect but come on

like

Plenty of healthcare is provided for this kid. Their premium plan is paid for by me.

Can you tell me how these people are applying for unemployment? My kids nanny’s husband is an autonomous shoe cobbler in NYC and hasn’t been able to apply. He has a green card and pays taxes. Does anybody know if he’s eligible? Would love to help them.
Regarding the OP’s question.... keep paying. Cheaper than paying for healthcare costs out of pocket imho.

like

It’s not everyday you hear “my kid’s nanny’s husband is an autonomous shoe cobbler” 😂

9 months ago before starting the apprenticeship, stepchild worked at a grocery store. They have a surge in demand and offered to rehire, but obviously there is no incentive whatsoever to take an available job with this cushy setup.

Eh. It’s only til July. Encourage them to be smart and save it

Honestly, I think this kid is in the rare minority. I don’t know why you seem to hate them so much though if you pay for their health insurance.

I had no problem telling my parents right out of college but just feel kind of weird about it as I progress in my career. She said I am getting a big head and I replied that the exact reason I don’t want to tell her how much I make is because I don’t want to brag/ have a big head. Should I tell my parents how much I make for the rest of my life? Am I over thinking it?

People who have transitioned from consulting to industry or an objectively less demanding role (i.e working 40-45 hrs a week), what makes you feel good about your decision? But I’m so achievement-driven that I’m having a hard time taking my foot off the gas; I know seeing peers advance once I’ve stepped away will be hard. For context, I’m F and ~8 yrs away from Partner
