Maybe it's just me, but I've mostly liked the clients I've had. They can be difficult sometimes - sure. But if you truly consider things from their perspective, it all often makes sense. We as consultants have a bias for change. Mid-level clients typically have a bias against it, because us recommending change often translates to (a) extra work for them, (b) the way they were doing it before we came in was wrong. And sometimes they're right - it can be difficult for us to fully grasp and appreciate the implementation challenges for us as outside consultants. The best cases I've worked on (the most satisfying) were the ones where both parties tried to at least respect and appreciate the perspective of the other. If you take the time to get to know them, what they're incented on, how you can make their lives easier and make them look good etc. etc. it makes the job a lot easier.
@OP: Not disagreeing that clients can be difficult. Just... we often live up to our reputations of the "inflexible, know-it-all, type A, better-than-you" consultants by sneering at clients - so trying to avoid that. Merry Christmas to you! :)
@BCG, thnx for the thoughts! I agree that there are a lot of considerations on the flip side with our clients. And there’s reasons why they oppose change, even if it's for the sake of change itself. I actually had in mind one particularly nasty mf'er that I think was all about them politics. But in the spirit of the season, Merry Christmas to him and to you my friend!
