Hey ACDs and below. What do you want from your CD? What can we do to help you that we aren’t? What should we keep doing that we are?

From an ACD perspective a CD should just be there at the end of the process to validate things. He shouldn't interfere too much with what ACDs have to do. CD should delegate not micromanage. From a broader perspective a CD should set up individual goals with everyone in his department, sit down with them and see how everyone can reach their full potential. CD should give precise feedback "keep pushing" is not a proper feedback. CD should make sure their team members are not burned out by work and not force them to stay late when it's not absolutely necessary.

OP, it’s nice to see someone trying to learn how to be better as a CD. I wish our industry had more people like you

The most successful CDs I know are the ones that push the team to the top. Mentally, creatively, personally. They are not on the top, but behind. They let the teams have the ideas and direct them in the higher level, but respect the work of the creatives. They don’t make them work for no reason. They protect their creatives.

Believe me. I had CDs like this and I would easily work for him on weekends if necessary, because I knew he/she was protecting me

Simply be more present. My CD’s are stretched too thin and I wish they limited how many meetings and projects they have in a day. Sometimes my teams only get a half an hour of their time in a week. Their insight, mentorship and guidance is valuable to their teams.

It’s REALLY simple: Don’t give ambiguous feedback, always have clear deadlines, don’t change your mind.

Acknowledge hard work. Just because someone may not be doing the most glamorous work, or be on the accounts that provide award winning work/book pieces doesn’t mean they aren’t out there busting their ass day in and day out.

I’m a planner but I’d love it if CDs learned how to review work in channels they aren’t super comfortable with. I’ve seen CDs kill good work because it didn’t fit their vision for the brand and buy shitty ideas that did.

Specific feedback and respect enough for the team’s work to let them present it to you, not just send you a PDF that you give feedback on. Presenting and the discussions and feedback that come from it are essential for creatives to grow and make better work. Plus it just kinda sucks to work your ass off and just get a PDF back that says “no, no, yes but push it farther, etc”.

@SAD1 love it. Thanks (per your first comment) as far as your second thanks too. I ask my team this shit all the time but felt I’d get more honest and broader feedback here. Plus there’s been a lot of negative here so let’s spin it.

That said when I stop learning I might as well die so I’m always trying to learn and be better

@Grey2 love it. I’m not sure how to solve that. Some people are stuck in their little world of one medium. I try to stay media agnostic but idea centric

@OP the issue with that is that often times a good idea is good because it’s right for the channel.

@Grey2 I agree. Guess what I meant is I look for good ideas and even if it’s not in an area we’re “supposed” to do work for I get it in front of the client. Eg if the client has a different agency for social but we have a good social idea I show

@AD1. I completely agree. PDF vs presenting is maddening. I find it takes more time too. You have to have 38 emails back and forth about the work after. Anyway you can corner your CD into listening to your preso for even 10 minutes? If not they’re not doing their job in my opinion

@GD1 that sucks. I’m meeting crazy but think my team is the most important part of my job. Maybe have a heart to heart and grab a coffee or beer to get that time. Honestly some of us suck at knowing how to manage people. Which really sucks

@JrAD1 I here you. I started in the mount room doing that kind of stuff. If I didn’t have the recognition I wouldn’t be in the position I am now. Not sure how to solve it if you’re not getting it but I feel you. Maybe if you’re CD doesn’t appreciate it another will. Find that person and follow them

@SrCW I like your comment because it’s good but there’s something that’s not right about it. Can’t say how to fix it but I’ll know when it’s right. Just a small tweak but do it totally different. Oh, shit. Nevermind. It was great.

Make a fucking decision. Stop telling me to keep pushing directions that aren’t working and wasting my time, your time, our agency’s time, and our client’s time.

This is an interesting article. The clients in here are obviously ridiculous, but it's kind of the risk agencies run with the lengths they go to acquire new business. The obvious mitigation strategy is to be very deliberate about what you will and won't do, but what agency has the discipline to do that?
