Partner is not a level or experience designation at google. Usually our partner managers work with our business partners. It's more a designation of who you support than of your level. Manager is a exactly that....you manage our team. You don't need to be a manager to go higher up the career ladder (this is very different than consulting). The vast majority of googlers prefer to be individual contributors. That IC role allows you to climb the ladder without dealing with people mgmt. Most of our managers are lateral transfers from other Google roles. The reason is that googlers like to be managed by people that know how to manage people in the Google manner....external hires can't manage googlers because they have never been managed in our way. External hires that join as managers do really poorly because they manage googlers like people from their previous company. If I had my choice...I would join as an IC

There are a lot of things that external managers need to change to manage googlers effectively. Here are a few - micromanage, too focused on increasing utilization, focused in sales over supporting employee growth, not talking to employees as peers, etc. One other example that comes to mind. In a consulting firm...if a manager does not get along with an employee....it's the employee that is asked to leave. At google...it's the manager that is asked to change their approach

Will a recruiter from another firm ever ask how much you're currently making if you're in the interview process with the new firm? If so, what do you tell them - accurate info or tell them higher?

Absolutely crestfallen... Seven year old son said he wanted to be a firefighter...NOT that he wanted to become a management consultant for the prestigious McKinsey & Company. I even asked him his total comp and he said he didn't have any... Fellas, is he behind? What TC should he expect at this age? How can I get him to pivot and realize his dreams are wrong?

Advice- I am new to consulting/Accenture from industry, I have been asked to charge 40/45 hrs a week but I get all my work done in less than 20 hrs. As a Christian I charged the exact hours worked which is 18hrs but my SM is not happy with that. What am I supposed to do? Any one ever have this issue of finishing tasks in less time?
