Neither of these roles will help you run a nonprofit. Strategy would be a safer bet if that is your goal. Judging from my wife’s experience in non profits (she’s on a few national and local nonprofit boards) the work is primarily raising money, managing resources and directing strategy. Not much technology in there. I’m sure it will vary depending on what type of non-profit but i don’t think it’ll be that far off from what I mentioned.
And I’ve most recently been pursuing projects to become an architect. I’m enjoying the work, and feel confident it’s a safe career choice. I see a lot of our peers wanting to go into strategy work — will this type of work give me more relevant skills for my long term goal (I want to run a nonprofit one day)?
I currently have two offers from a T2 strategy firm (enterprise architecture) and a tech company (cloud sales). Compensation is better from the sales role, even without commission. I’m just looking for some perspective from y’all: what choice would be better for my future outlook?
Ok. If neither help, what will these roles enable me to do in the future? How should I decide which role is best to pursue?
You should start working in the non-profit world or consulting for non-profits. How would either of those roles be applicable to a non-profit leadership position?
