Hey all,

I have a two week old baby who was born 8 lbs 15 oz.

She has really increased her feeding recently - she's not full unless she has at least four ounces every three hours or less. I can't keep up and it seems like a lot for a two week old, even a big one.

I'm supplementing with formula, but is this normal at all? My mom and MIL have both suggested my milk is weak, but wondering if there's another reasonable explanation.

This is normal .. don’t trust anyone else’s comments or advise more than the baby. Trust the baby to guide you

Not a doctor or lactation consultant but - it’s very common to overfeed in the beginning, esp if you are supplementing and not practicing pace feeding. I think the typical range is 24-32 oz a day for breastfed babies but 2 week olds tend to fall on the lower end there.

If your concern is around your own milk - in theory (for most people, barring health issues, etc.) you will make enough milk to meet your baby’s needs without need to supplement, as long as you are feeding on demand. Baby will still be fussy! But just keep doing it and your supply will catch up. The more you supplement, the less milk you produce from the breast. If she is gaining weight normally you can dial back on supplementing and give her more breast.

As someone who has 5 kids - a fed baby is a happy baby. Feed the little person as much as they want. Worst case, you’ll have some extra laundry from spit up which isn’t a big deal. If you are SUPER concerned, check in with your doc.

What do they mean your milk is “weak”? That’s some superstitious mojo talk. Babies feed this frequently when they are newborns, there’s been a few posts like this recently, it’s normal! Are you saying you can’t keep up because you’re exhausted? Are you having a letdown? How do you know how many ounces baby is getting if you’re breastfeeding? Babies can also have an intense suckling instinct - my first baby would just stay latched to my breast 24/7 if I had let her. I had to give her a pacifier to suck and let me have a break and sanity. The first 6 weeks were the worst for me with my babies, then it gradually starts to get better with longer stretches between feedings etc. For now, it’s just breastfeed, change diaper, sleep, repeat. Breastfeeding your baby is what tells your body to keep up with the demand and increase supply. If you’re concerned I would highly, strongly recommend an appointment with a lactation consultant, not your mom and MIL. If breastfeeding is not worth it to you to continue, then that’s a fair choice too, your well-being is equally as important as baby being fed. I just know from 3 kids that I personally was glad I stuck out the newborn phase because it got better for me.

Do not rely on us, your mom, or in laws

I had an 8lb2oz baby recently.

At two weeks was doing a chest-breastfeed + 2oz holle formula every feed.
Quickly moved up to BF+3oz bottle (pumped breast milk or formula) every feed as he was clearly still hungry.
Now, at 6 weeks we’re still doing BF+3oz bottle every feed, but my supply has kept increasing so bottles are mostly pumped breast milk (specifically he has now dropped his night time feeds. He now gets pumped milk supplemented from 6am to 3pm).

I’m not particularly over the top about breast milk vs formula… You mentioned you have some relations who suggest you have weak supply. Your supply is still growing for the first 6 to even 10 weeks! Do what you need to keep your baby happy and healthy.

Bigger babies are hungrier than small or premie babies. They also get to 10lb quicker which means more nighttime sleep hours for mama - yay!

My supply was still increasing at 2 weeks. When the baby was 6 - 8 weeks I felt I was producing a lot more milk

I’ve been asked to weigh in on how to improve my firms parental leave policy. It’s currently 8 weeks paid for birth parent with an extra week for each year at the firm (up to 12 weeks total) and 2 weeks paid for non-birth parent. I’m in a major city, firm is a boutique that has been around a very long time. What would you suggest? Any studies or research you’ve seen recently on trends in parental leave policies also helpful. I’d like to have some sort of data to back up what I recommend. TIA!

Neither my husband nor I are good with change and when my husband and I went for the ultrasound he nervously asked "she's too sick to eat anything other than her vitamins and water, is it ok for her and the baby to go without?" Our doctor just smiled and replied "don't worry, baby takes" I don't know why but that was so funny to us. It kind of became our mantra as we navigate and move our life around that "baby takes," its made it feel more Us vs Change rather than Me vs Him. Thought I'd share

Found a most enlightening work on decolonial history with tons of TIL moments especially about Anti Colonial movements in Egypt, China, Japan and course India in the 19th and 20th centuries. Most histories this period often adopt a Euro-centric lens but this book flips it and tells the stories of these turbulent times from the vantage point of the pioneering Asian leaders like Tagore, Al Afghani, Kang Youwei etc. Lovers of Asian history would surely appreciate this book

Looking for some specific info on Short Term Disability eligibility at EY. I would like to accept an offer, but won’t be eligible for 16-wk parental leave before 1 yr of tenure. This is an important detail for me since I am expecting this year. I have received in email that for parents who have a child *before* 1 year, that they are eligible for STD after 3 mnths at 100% for 6 weeks (+3weeks of approved PTO). is there fine print that pregnancy is a ‘pre-existing condition’ and I’d be denied?

Ladies how do you manage your relationship when your spouse holds you to what you promised you would do before you got married but then you realize you can’t do it. I had promised my husband I would fast with him for an entire day on a specific religious holiday, but when I did for the first time I had stomach pains, headache, and nausea. I told him I can’t do it for that long again but he said “we’ll see, you just need to push through”.
