Hey all, I have been at Bank in HCOL area for two years in product, have been promoted, and make $113K, looking at a potential $5K bump at EOY. With 2 YOE in product, do you think it’s worth going startup? Do you think it will 1. Improve learning and 2. boost earnings? I am casually looking right now and have had recruiters open to $140K/$150K base at mid size startups, but it’s mostly fallen through after first round.

I think you’ll find that you’ll it’s more likely improve your learnings than boost earnings, but if you can find an opportunity that pays more than go for it! Having spent time at startups, mid size companies, and large global companies, my experience has been that startups provide the opportunity to experiment, be scrappy, and be more involved in hands-on user research and problem solving. You’ll make money at larger companies, but they have very specific structure and processes in place - having your learnings from a startup experience can help you provide a new perspective and be innovative and creative within their existing processes. My two cents.

So, stupid question. At my biglaw firm we’ve taken paycuts and the partners have slowed their distributions. What does this actually mean? Management would not tell us if they were actually taking a pay cut. At the end of the year, if profits stay the same because of our paycuts, will they still make the same amount?

Do you think offers will be higher with 1 YOE than 5 months experience?

Additional Posts in Product Management

Hi everyone! I am currently a product manager at a B2B tech/data company, overseeing a set of data products and applications, including our web portal. I've recently been wondering what PM looks like in different industries, specifically in hardware/manufacturing. Has anyone here made a transition like that or worked in both spheres? How did these compare for you? Were there any particular challenges you faced or new skillsets you needed?
Any insight is welcome and appreciated!

Hey folks- I’m a product manager (tenure wise, a senior analyst) working with a difficult/ stubborn SME (who is tenure wise a manager). He is extremely smart and knows the ins and outs of this problem space, competitors, and even our business priorities, but utterly rejects design and product thinking. For example…CONTD

Have the opportunity to join a startup consultancy as a Product Manager and move away from the big 4.

Going to be employee 15 as opposed to an org with ~650K employees.

Same pay. A LOT of growth opportunity. Less overall benefits, but I think the experience will net me out to be a Director in just a year or two within the org, and a lot of potential to move out from there.

I'm slightly terrified, but the team feels awesome, and they have some big clients.
