How's the work culture at frog like these days?
I usually have a cancelation fee of 50% in my contracts and retain copyrights to any work related to canceled contracts. If it was a rush job, I'd definitely increase the amount. I'm surprised you didn't have this all addressed in your contract. They should know better.
In my contracts, I retain rights to my artwork until the contract is completed (and I specify what rights the client will have...whether they can only use it in a certain market, or for a specified time, or for merchandising, etc.). I do not want my unfinished designs out in the wild.
More importantly, though, you could have a client that takes your initial design comps, says they're going in a "different direction" and then have someone copy/edit your designs and you only get a portion of what the full contract would've paid. Clients stealing your artwork is something you need to protect yourself from.
I would charge them for the amount I worked, nothing less and nothing more, especially if they don’t even seem to be trying to get away from paying. If they were ok with my work and everything was going smoothly, chances are the cancellation has not to do with you or your work. I would not burn a bridge over a little bit of money. But I would also request a meeting (or honest email) to understand what happened and improve things on my end so this doesn’t happen again.
They might keep the assets and use them after the fact so charge the original fee if you were almost done with the project. Doesn't make sense for them to pay 50% for an 85% percent done project, especially if it was a rush requested by them
These things always depend tho. Do you want to keep working with them? Is that a possibility? Etc. Sometimes maintaining a long term relationship is worth taking a small financial hit
