Hey all! Interviewing and need some insights about accepting a non-tech product marketing job. I currently work in SaaS but was offered a higher paying job in educational publishing. It’s a non-tech product marketing role. I want to take the job but I don’t know if moving out of tech would be a bad move for a product marketer? Would it be harder to pivot back to tech?

Agreed with the above post. Adding my two cents: SaaS is not everything though. As a product marketer having worked in SaaS, selling APIs or digital tools is very valuable but it’s a very specific skill set. Working for a physical product is a VERY different skill set. Being a well rounded PMM who can sell any type of product pays long term dividends. So that’s all to say, don’t take the job for the money, but if you actually want to make a switch and sell something different, go for it. More than most roles, PMMs have to like the product they sell, and if that’s the case with the new opp, you’ll thrive.

Answer depends on 3 things: 1. What will your core responsibilities be in the new role? Will the bullets on your resume in this role, the work, and the types of teams you’ll be collaborating with, all be very similar and transfer well to tech in the future? 2. How long have you been doing SaaS product marketing? If you’ve only been doing it a few years then it could be harder to transfer back, compared to having had multiple roles or a real depth of tech experience under your belt. 3. How strong is your tech network? If you’ve got a strong network and maintain it well, it won’t be as difficult to transition back. One other thing: don’t treat money like a scarce commodity. If you have a certain skill set, it’s not. You got a higher paying job in Ed Publishing. I bet you could get one at another tech company if you preferred that path. 👍🏽
