I hear if you go to the farmers market in DuPont you can witness a homeless man screaming obscenities and urinating in the middle of the street.
I'm not homeless, bro.
This is an offbeat one, but get a couple of mini microscopes from Amazon (they’re like $10-$20) and go to the botanical garden next the Capitol. The garden building is usually much quieter and less crowded than the Smithsonians and it’s a lot of fun to look at different kinds of exotic leaves/ spores/petals/etc under a microscope.
Things I do with my ASD kiddo (also with sensory sensitivities) that he enjoys: Visit to the top of the Washington monument, monuments tour at night, Zoo, gravelly point, udvar-hazy air and space.
*Definitely* Udvar-Hazy.

Sculpture Garden is quick but kid friendly
Spy museum, zoo
The zoo!
Planet word!
My friend recently visited and their daughter’s two favorite spots were the zoo (but have to go really early in the day if you don’t want to be there with a ton of people and get your tickets online now) and the Garrison Elementary playground.
The Arboretum in SE could also be a good place to go if you need to get away from crowds
And also Teddy Roosevelt Island for a nice walk/away from crowds
