Depends on your tax situation.

like

EY1 I never said otherwise, it does of course grow tax free. However, it is still more advantageous to contribute to a traditional after you earn more than $38/76k.

like

I'd rather 'pay' tax on it in retirement where I can employ strategies to make my tax burden $0 instead of paying the $4,600 (or more) in tax today. Roth 401k is a terrible deal for anyone earning a decent income.

like

Nobody is worried, its about which strategy is more advantageous. Traditional wins, it simple.

Roth 401k only makes sense if you earn less than $37.9k single or $76k married. If you earn more than that go traditional.

like

Right, which means you're paying tax on that amount, which I do not consider not having "any consequences AT ALL.

like

Thanks, dad. I think most people know that. We're talking about the fact that once you hit a certain income level, traditional tends to favor the Roth, for various reasons. Tax bracket may be one of them. It is for me, as I am working to move from and offset ordinary income as much as possible to decrease my overall tax burden.

like

"it's not how much you make, it's how much you keep."

Taxes are part of the deal, but I'm guessing you are not a fed contractor who is exposed to the gross waste of taxpayer dollars on a daily basis. I'm a much better steward of my money than the government will ever be, and I have every right to keep as much of it as I am legally able to.

If you’re above 118k, you should be contributing to a traditional 401k so you can contribute to a Roth IRA.

Honestly, you should contribute as much as possible as early as possible in your career. If you max out your 401k and IRA, you will be FINE. Read Reddit finance stuff and it can help if you are truly worried about what type

^false. your earning doesn’t change the fact that Roth growth is tax free.

Why? What would be the reasoning behind that SM1?

You also avoid bumping up to the next tax bracket as long as possible if you max out traditional.

"Bumping up" to a new tax bracket does not have any consequences (AT ALL) for the amount you made before you bumped up. The "next" bracket amount only charges that percentage on the money above the last bracket.

For the amount you made before that, no consequences

If I can reduce my taxable income below that 91.9k mark, you better believe I'm going to do it.

I'll go on a rant: What is the big deal with taxes? Why is everyone SO WORRIED? You literally get things from the government ALL THE TIME. You are in debt to them imho: roads, education, orphans, representation in a court of law, government grants for domestic violence aid centers, so many other things. Just calculate how much you will pay, and never expect anything more and you'll never worry about moving to another tax bracket. Also, there is never a time where making more money does not leave you with more money. Just chill with the hate on taxes.

Income tax is a concept that is only about a hundred years old. It's an idea that was sold to the masses as a "good thing" that would fix all their problems because the average person would only be paying the tiniest percentage, while the highest earners would hit brackets of ~90%. Of course we all know about "bait and switch." Get the income tax sold to the public, then set it wherever the oligarchs want. Eventually younger generations will just accept it because it's awesome that big daddy government gives us free stuff (even though the government ran just fine without it, before the great federal bloat).

New here from 🇨🇦, and have an odd question about the health system here. I went to a Dr. for a fully covered standard appointment and swore I uploaded my insurance to their portal. I was laid off from my tech company a week later and lost benefits two weeks post that. THEN I get the full bill from the Dr. and they never billed my insurance or called for it if it was missing. Is this normal? The US system is crazy when it comes to billing! Never comes on time or correctly🫠

Holiday Pay: We have 8 paid holidays, total of 64 hours, where everyone receives 8 hours of holiday pay regardless of what their schedule is. For example, someone working 10 or 12 hours shifts will receive 8 hours of holiday pay. To make up for the hours that they don't receive, they use PTO. What does your company do? Do you pay based off someone's schedule or is it the same across the board for everyone regardless of what they work?
