Sorry I didn't realize you had already given it a shot. I think it's more about picking the right hostels (popular ones with a bar inside or large social area) to meet other people. If you stay in hotels people are generally more insular. FYI I've meet tons of other women who traveling solo in places like Colombia and as long as you have your wits about you you'll be fine.

What kind of groups? I've found usually that a lot of the "group" trips can be done much more cheaply if you go on your own. It may be scary at first but there's no easier way to meet people (especially travelers who are usually very welcoming) than traveling solo.

Have to say that solo traveling can be extremely nice and a ton of fun

I second contiki. My friend went on a trip through them and loved it

I'm a female. I did travel once alone but was too scared to actually do anything more than walk around, go for scuba and eat at nice restaurants alone (in my defense the most old people I saw in one week of my life!) but I never got around to sitting at a bar or to go to a club because I did not want to "party" when I couldn't count on anyone. Hence the group and not completely solo.

I did a contiki when I finished college. It was great, but at 30 you will feel a bit old when you're surrounded by Aussies on Gap year. Once I got comfortable traveling by myself I never looked back. So much better and it's easy to meet travelers at hostels and such. I've done solo travel across South America, Asia, and Europe. Solo travel really gives you an amazing sense of freedom and I highly encourage everyone try it once. You are your best company sometimes.

Since I have been on FB, it's really active Monday morning and Thursday evenings. Also it is moderately busy during week but usually not Friday nights. I am enjoying all the Friday night posts!

Is it true that you can only deduct 3k per year in losses from your brokerage? I had a 30k realized loss this year and was not aware that I can only claim 3k per year. If there is a cap on claiming losses why arr bonuses and gains taxed at full? I get a 20k bonus but only get 12k in hand. I lose 30k gambling but I can only claim 3k, this makes no sense
