Hey ECEs! What are your thoughts on technology in the classroom? Specially Videos: short YouTube videos or Sesame Street episodes?

I'm a public school Pre-K teacher and we have SMART boards in our classrooms and iPads for the kids. Admin wants us to have & use the same tools the rest of the rest of the district has. I use my SMART board for circle time, we do calendar, attendance, birthdays, weather PLUS skill introduction and practice with the SMART board. It has become a valuable tool for us. We also use short videos to reinforce concepts and it works great for us. I even use it as a center at times for writing practice or games to reinforce skills iPads are used to play educational games and we also use SeeSaw with our kids. They learn how to record and save data as they are learning and playing. Teachers can give the kids specific assignments (I use my small group time for this to teach them how then they can usually manage on their own after that). I can then go back and see what they did AND their parents can as well. We've found some great ways to use tech in our PK classes without taking away their essential hands-on play. 😁

I am also a pre-k teacher in San Diego California. He also have the smart board and some I pad for the kids. I also use it during circle time , when it’s raining we put exercise videos or song for the to si g and dance when we can’t go outside to the playground. The I pad have only educational games and depending on the theme we use them in small group to show them pictures ( for example the parts of a plant and how they grow , or pictures of different countries

I think if they’re purposeful that’s one thing. I used YouTube to find short tours of places our classroom couldn’t visit like other countries or for short exercises/yoga stretches. But I prefer active uses of technology like letting them take pictures or videos of their work, or showing them how to look up information together. I just feel like many of them get more than enough screen time at home, so I try to limit it. It can also be a great tool though!

Yes really, Elementary School! This is what fighting against! I totally agree that the kiddos should never just be set in front of a screen and left to entertain themselves. But if a 3 minute video clip that teacher and students engage in could possible enhance the learning, what’s the issue? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m NOT a big fan of videos in the classroom for Whole Group!!! I find the children tune out when they’re watching in a group, and move into other things like poking each other, and getting restless!! They can watch the Boob tube at home for free!! They need constant engaging activity while they are in class. In SMALL group, short videos can be productive with a very specific goal in mind! But No more than 4 children at a time! And if they are not engaged, turn it off and have a plan B in your pocket Ready to Go!!! Because they will quickly get out of control.

I watch songs from super simple learning. My PreK students respond to it very well. It’s the only one! Our school also has Smart Boards, so my lesson plans has to reflect the usage of tech because of the Smart Board. I don’t think it’s bad in moderation

My school year starts very screen-heavy because I’ve found that my kids don’t have the attention span to listen to me teach. I show videos of songs that go with our circle time songs and a cartoon at lunch. (A parent survey told me that most kids are used to eating in front of the tv! They had no idea how to stay seated without it.) I slowly fade the amount of tv over the course of the school year, as I teach those skills, and we don’t watch that much by the end of the year.

I love watching ABCmouse .com videos on alphabet sounds. I wouldn’t rely on videos all day just short enough to introduce or reinforce a concept. I know that our classrooms don’t have smartboards and I could easily see the benefit on some hands on learning.
