Hey everybody, new here. But after reading through some of the post , I see that I am not the only one in the same boat. I’m in my 2 year as a teacher, currently a middle school math teacher. It was never my intention to begin with and I don’t mind it. I just know that’s not where my heart is. Anybody have similar experiences moving from teaching into another career such as something in finance. How would I even begin to break into the field with a degree in something not particularly related.

i was in teaching. left it for grad school. got internships and eventually full time jobs in HR, learning, and now consulting

like

to clarify, those jobs were in finance.

Is your degree in maths or teaching? If maths, that’s certainly a transferable degree that with some networking you could spin into an entry role… might have to go back to school though for a MBA or perhaps a MSF depending on what kind of finance you want to try and do.

like

Degree in Psychology, business was my minor and was always interested in it. Math has always been natural for me and ended up in a position where I was offered the role. The goal is to go back to school and figured that’s the next move. Just looking for entry level that would still allow me to pay the bills and go back for grad school.

Would welcome advice on how to think about transfer / negotiating compensation if I stay in Consulting. TIA!

Additional Posts in Career Pivot

Hi all! I have been working in Talent Acquisition/Recruiting with some experience in HR/Payroll for the majority of my career, 9-10 years. I also have a few years of business operations management experience. I am looking to advance my career and believe Project Management might be the good route. Few questions:
- Google or PMP?
- For PMP, what do they consider for the years of required experience?

I would love to connect with anyone with experience in PM to discuss. Thank you in advance!

At what point does “ego” stop mattering? Over the past 5 years I’ve worked my way to being an Account Manager, but ultimately my career goal is to work for the government. There’s an opportunity to be an admin assistant working for the government, and would be a nice way for me to get in and move up. But the title change from Account Manager to Assistant is a big deterrent. Logically I know that it doesn’t matter, but emotionally it’s hard to feel like I am taking a major career step back?

How do you know it’s time to leave a job/pivot? (vs sticking it out). We’ve grown really quickly as a company so it’s definitely an adjustment.

Pros:
- Lots of people are great to work with
- Smart marketers
- Has been a huge career accelerator leadership wise
- Growing company and stable-ish industry
- Hopeful future

Cons
- More red tape, slower innovation
- More meetings/reporting than work
- Doesn’t feel like creativity is a value
- A few prominent people left recently
- Lots of burnout
