Hey everyone!
At an entry level, do you believe finding a mentor is the best way to advance in advertising? I’ve been out of school for 2 years now and have applied to quite a few entry/mid-level positions at local agencies and have had no luck. I currently work at an acct. firm and would like to move on to an account or strategy position. I believe mentors should stem from a personal relationship, however I can’t say that I have anyone personally who can mentor me in this space. Any advice?

@Marketing Specialist - I would suggest attending as many virtual industry events as you can (follow the 4As, Ad Colour, Ad Council, Julian Cole, 4As MAIP and a few of your favorite agencies on social and LinkedIn for event announcements) - really take advantage of the quarantine. My go-to move (and I say this as a big introvert) is to message event speakers, hosts or attendees that I'd like to connect with on LinkedIn. I basically state the connection (let them know how/where I know them from, "I really enjoyed your talk last week on...."), show interest in something they said/do/etc, and then ask one smart question about that thing. The trick is making it short n' sweet and not asking too much of someone too soon. Ideally, you'd want to reach out in the first 48 hrs post-event. This move got me a lot of informal interviews when I started out which gave me access to hiring managers who would post openings and agency events that I wouldn't have known about otherwise. If the person is a hiring manager or in HR, I recommend asking for an informal interview and just be frank ("I'm trying to break into this industry. Do you have any tips for entry level folks?"). Remember - once you're in, you're in. This is the hard part. Keep on keeping on - you got this!

I find mentors on LinkedIn. I also follow people in the industry I admire on LinkedIn and usually find out about great panels and programs from their posts

Great tip! I’ve attend webinars and then followed the LinkedIn accounts of the speakers who were compelling. Looks like I need to work on my post event follow-up.

This is based on my experience so it may not work for all, but I would recommend prioritizing longitudinal (folks above your title) and lateral (folks at your level, entry qnd intermediate level folk) networking first before finding a mentor. One mentor gives you one perspective. Most of the ad folks that I know have their own unique ways into the industry so prioritizing networking over mentorship will give you a greater depth of insights and perspectives to work with early on in your career. Remember that one day you'll be fighting for a position amongst the peers of your generation - mentors tend to be older than their mentees (I had a mentor close to my age once during an internship - the blind leading the blind lol) and will offer helpful insights some of which will transcend generational differences and age, but an understanding of what your peers are thinking/doing and how they're thinking/doing it will be helpful in the long run.

Thanks this is great advice! For building that network would you suggest LinkedIn? Local associations?

DM me please. I'd love to help you find someone. My biggest career regret is not having a mentor myself.

Suggest distinguishing between types of relationships to support you, and having more than 1: a coach (helps with how to do your job); mentor (provides guidance and insights on navigating the culture and career moves); sponsor (becomes personally vested in your career and takes risks by advocating for you to get stretch assignments and promotions, often unbeknownst to you and this type of advocacy is generally earned based on trust). Also, suggest that you try to bring value to the table in all cases and have a genuine mutual and loyal relationship with people who take an interest in helping you... what can you do for them — share something you learned? an article? Make an introduction? Toot their horn? help them with a project? Also you may benefit from mentoring — as in advice — without having a formal label, from having several mentors, and it’s good to think about having mentors on different facets of your career and life. One essential should be having a mentor who is in your existing organization.

My wish was that I created an executive board in my 20s or early 30s. Mentors, career coach, tough love guru to guide me. It’s easier now with social media. I agree with Leo Burnett 1 and others about following up with panelist. The problem with that is there are 7 others doing that too. Mix n match. You can build a relationship over time, ask someone outright, join a sub-group in your discipline or group like 100 Roses from Concrete. Sometimes just be honest and transparent like this post and give a mini overview of yourself and say you are looking for a mentor. Any suggestions. Best wishes.

Hi everyone!

I’m really looking to break into my first
Salesforce role! Could anyone provide guidance on some Salesforce partners or roles for remote entry level admin/dev roles? I wouldn’t consider myself entry level, but as far as Salesforce goes, I have limited formal experience (with more informal) currently to market myself in that area! I’m pretty confident using it having used other CRMs in the past and going through trailheads. TIA Deloitte EY Accenture Capgemini PwC Salesforce

I want to be an HR generalist, but I am afraid I may have to take a step back in order to do so. I’ve been in recruiting and the talent management sector of HR for 5+ years.
