I would ask why it’s your dream first, I doubt people can realistically give a good answer
I’d recommend going to another firm in the same space that has recently reacted to the Goldman Analyst Survey with “we’re hiring more people”
Then make a lateral move to GS (if that’s what your heart desires)
That being said, I know people at Goldman whose managers worked them until they were literally hospitalized* and told them they didn’t have the weekend off to attend a family funeral. Is that where you wanna be?
*some blame should be put on the analyst too — too much coffee/ not enough water = bad. This was pre covid
Thank you for the good advice. Their work life balance is pretty brutal. I’m leaning more towards internal audit / risk division, I’ve heard it’s slightly better there

Have you done other IB internships during your summers? If not than honestly your chances of getting an analyst offer are near 0.
Have you been applying to other IBs? Your best bet is to put in a good year or two at another firm and continue networking to try and lateral
That must be hard for the interns who’ve had hopes of working full time. But I think only a few selected individuals get offered a full time at GS as well. It’s a bit tough these days
One of my close friends worked there for years and says it’s his single biggest regret in his entire life.
Thank you for sharing that. I feel like a lot of people don’t hear about this aspect of the firm often enough. They definitely overwork their employees
Both I and my husband worked at Goldman for many years - there are definitely some great people there, but also more than your average number of psychopaths, and the work life balance is...not good. Additionally, if you aren’t in a revenue producing division (like IA, risk or compliance) the ROI you get is poor because compensation is often below that of other comparable firms. I’m not saying working at GS for a couple years and marketing it can’t be a viable strategy, but it should only be that, not a long term career plan. That’s just my 2 cents.
I wholeheartedly agree with you. I’ve heard how tough it gets. Some even said it’s worse than the big 4. But it’s definitely a good place to start your career. Not many people get that opportunity
I worked in IBD so I can’t speak for IA, but my advice would be to find ways to network. Learn how they recruit ppl. See if there are ppl you can connect with to introduce you to ppl in the group.
Not to be unhelpful. But not sure why it’s your dream. But it seems like the place you need to know someone to get into or have all the credentials at top tier before applying.
One firm isn’t the end all be all...you can try changing your hirevue answers and look for what the firm values/wants out of their interns to match your answer to that. But don’t miss out on other opps that could be better for you in the long run because you’re so focused on getting this one thing!
