Hey everyone. Working for the USDA FSIS. Any feedback regarding getting a master in public health vs master in food science to advance in career to EIAO

Both will work as long as you take a public focus and can explain. What is the GS series for what you do now vs what EIAO has openings for?

Public health goes further outside of USDA, 100%. Food safety might net you a higher private salary but you’ll always be in the food industry. Public health has other academic openings like governance/administration, econ, and urban planning. 11/12 is the GS scale, but what are the series codes for the positions you’re looking at?

https://www.federalpay.org/jobs/gs

Having a masters that matches the titles is better than not having one. I have participated on hiring panels for GS 11+ and the usual suspects for the job generally had a masters that matched the series classification.

If you want more options, do public health. Otherwise, pick the other track if you want to hone in on your food safety career.

I have focused my MPH on food safety with papers and projects. The MPH has given me more flexibility in career options and continuing education. You can always pick up certifications to make up in areas you feel you lack in one or the other.

I have two questions. I have 10 years of experience in multiple sectors and I have been trying to gain a leadership position. I am attempting my PHR this summer but what are some tips in order for me to obtain a leadership position? Also, how long does it take to obtain another position out of state? I am trying to move to Houston but I don’t want to move until I am confident I can obtain a position in the city before packing up and leaving.

New at a job. During interview, I was clear on my desire to move from doing work representing individuals to businesses. I took the job even though there was a chance to work on cases representing individuals. I was hoping it would be an opportunity to gain experience on doing work for businesses. I suspect that my employer is trying to pigeonhole me based on comments and actions. How do I avoid this? I want to have some control of my career. I left my job because I was done w/representing ppl.

Received admission offers from Kellogg, NYU Stern, and Georgetown’s EMBA program with partial scholarships. Can either of these programs help you pivot into VC/PE (at associate/senior associate level) in the DC area if you have T2 management consulting experience (Deloitte, Accenture, EY, PWC, etc) and limited finance experience? Trying to determine if I should defer a year and apply to Wharton.... Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks!

A HR question I really want to understand. ISRS HR quoted a podcast "The not so great resignation" saying 70% regret leaving and many want to go back to old employer. If this really the case the employee likely left due to higher pay at the new company. If they want to boomerang back they will likely come back at even a higher rate than they left the new company for. So getting double raise when they boomeranged. Isn't it unbeneficial, why not just give employee a 7% raise in the first place?

Is it really that difficult to get hired for a federal job? I was interviewed for a GS12 job but never heard back, they still didn’t hire anyone and I didn’t get a rejection. I am still applying to new jobs but I was told it is impossible to move up the grade level now. Everyone is telling me to stick with the government. What are your thoughts?

My partner got a City of Toronto offer. Salary band is 104-121k. HR asked for his expectations and he said 115k. HR came back with a 106k offer stating nobody on the team makes that much so they cant offer it. Also said she is unsure if there is any wiggle room if any at all. I’ve looked at everyone on the team with the same titles salary on the sunshine list and the lowest I see is 121k. I assume there is an OT component of some sort but also can’t confirm. Thoughts? /negotiating advice?

I feel under qualified at work but I also don’t know how much of it is in my head or in reality. I head a team and they seem to be happy… but I’m also personally not satisfied what we’re delivering is enough… so I have this weird mixed feeling of the stuff we’re doing not really being that stretching, but at the same time I feel out of my depth. I really don’t know what to do and whether to hold on in the hope I’ll learn something or go back to a lower grade and a more comfortable life.
