Hey šŸ  fam. Brother is graduating from a small liberal arts school with a philosophy degree. Heā€™s having trouble finding a job as a paralegal. What careers have your Philosophy friends pursued?

Liberal-arts majors in general have awesome research, analytical, and critical-thinking skills. Itā€™s what they do!

like

He needs to figure out what heā€™s passionate about and go do that, degree aside. If he doesnā€™t know the answer to that question by now, the best thing you can do is help him answer it so he can focus

Grad school?

like

Public Administration, Law, Education - worth considering smaller / local / cheaper schools if heā€™s not concerned with the rat race that cares about that sort of thing.

Also may be worth looking into certifications that are a little more targeted to particular jobs if he doesnā€™t want to commit to another degree yet.

Advertising, publishing, and teaching come to mind...though grad school for something practical might be a better idea...

Law school? If he wants to be a paralegal, why not go all the way

likehelpful

Heā€™s toying with the idea of law school. And wanted to try that first. He doesnā€™t want to do corporate law though. He also felt like it would be an easier job to get (given his background).

Teach For America type programs wouldn't be bad

Iā€™m trying to convince him to do a coding boot camp or study and apply to consulting firms.

PhD

Yeah, he doesnā€™t want to end up chasing tenure at some small school. He doesnā€™t really want to do philosophy anymore.

Any ideas on PhD programs that could give him a liveable wage when heā€™s done?

High school teacher.... not the most profitable option though

I work, where would I make philosopher friends?

Dual JD/MBA

18X

I was a philosophy major and, obviously, Iā€™m in consulting. Most of my peers went to grad school though

Most went to law school and are in corporate law now

If he wants to be a paralegal, the contracts manager position isnā€™t that much different and from my experience McKinsey employs a lot of them

Good luck to your brother OP. He has an amazing sibling.

Good morning everyone! I am currently working as an Occupational Therapist at a Level 1 center but am looking to pivot into the clinical research field. Can anyone give any insight into transitioning from bedside to clinic research? Everytime I look online there seems to be certificate programs that may or may not be a scam/waste of money. Would appreciate any thoughts, insight, personal experience, referral., etc.!

Thank you!
