I donāt know girl. This is a toughy. Imagine you are the leader and have to choose between you and someone else that can have immediate ROI... I donāt think itās about discriminating you, itās more about who is the better candidate for the investment.
With that being said - this should not stop your effort in pursuing. You can be a killer acting mgr and your performance will make your competitors look like trolls. Now, if you donāt get it, you get a wonderful baby you wanted - and there is always trade off.
Hmm. I donāt know... I can certainly see flavor of that but I think thatās up to debate. To me, discrimination is about using the āstereotypeā to assume who you are and treat you differently. Not based on true fact. Eg. If you are not staffed in a project because you are new parent and your team assume that you will not be able to commit to the high quality work and time commitment, then itās discrimination. Because that assumption is unvalidated.
I think the intent of promotion is to confer more power so promotee can then produce more value. Recognition of capability, accomplishment and hard work is not the core intent per se - itās just qualifies you that you are ready for more power. So if you are indeed away and not available to work, is that discrimination? There is no ātreating you differently based on unvalidated perceptionā. Hmm...
I have seen people get promoted while on maternity leave. Especially considering delays due to covid, I would definitely think promotion as possible while pregnant / maternity leave
Itās possible to get promoted while on mat leave, but you have to be very proactive. I would recommend gathering all your feedback & evidence you need for your case before you go on leave, while your work is still fresh in everyoneās mind.
In my case, I came back from leave a month before our review season and my review was neutral because everyone had forgotten the work I did before I was on leave and I hadnāt had enough time to make an impact on my new project. Set me back another 18 months... frustrating to say the least.
Years, affect promotion?
Iāve seen it happen twice at my previous firm - in Canada, too, where one lady was taking the full 1.5 years for mat leave and was promoted while on leave. Needless to say though it depends on your firm and specific situation. Good luck and congrats!!

Yea, you can take 18 months leave in Canada shared between the parents. Itās not at 100% salary for the full 18 months though
