Be a better associate so that they don’t have to micromanage you. Jk taking out my frustrations out on you.
But yes talk to them and see where they are coming from because I’m sure they are either used to needing to micromanage so it’s become an unconscious habit or you two have different expectations. Communication is almost always the answer! Tell them what works best for you and they should be willing to adapt!
People act like that when they feel loss of control. Gets better over time as they learn your work style and quality. I’d provide updates before they ask you for them - that usually is the biggest help.
You could try to micromanage upward, if you send them your plan in the AM and a status at night, or have 10min touch points throughout the day.. then they may not feel the need to micromanage as much. Until I trust someone it’s hard in this virtual environment to get a sense of how things are going, and at the end of the day your senior would be held responsible for your work/progress.. you also don’t necessarily realize/have visibility to what they are dealing with.. a manager or partner above them might be making their life hell and they could be shielding you from that, but also trying to make sure they can speak to things etc.. Obviously not always the case, but sometimes managers/partners act completely different around staff
Tell them: Cant you see that you're smothering me
Holding too tightly, afraid to lose control
I’m struggling with this too. I’m a 1st year in audit, but I have a few years of experience in tax and corporate accounting at other firms. It’s tough managing up (forget about learning/finishing a WP) when you’re getting a ping “checking in” every 15-20 minutes. Despite a 5-hour daily virtual audit room, complete with morning, afternoon, and evening status meetings, and a MS teams daily status sheet to update. Yes, I’m venting, but there’s no time to do any actual work if all my time is spent updating/walking through my progress. I’m wondering when my senior actually gets any work done with all these check ins... Any advice?
