Hey Fishes - my team has added a lot of people within the past year and I have started to wonder whether or not my salary as a Sr level employee is “equitable” ( i.e: are these new hires reporting into me getting paid more ?) . Any recommendations on how to have a productive conversation with my director about this?

Why don't you ask some peers first

OP if you're super worried, you might want to start with the two colleagues that were let go.

You may be several levels higher than your new teammates and have highly valued skills and qualities, but if you've been at the company for a long time (10+ years), you're almost certainly unfairly compensated. Don't be surprised if someone hired at one pay grade lower than you and with zero knowledge of the details of your work has been hired at a higher salary than yours.

Depends on how you classify your relationship with your immediate manager and his/manager. If very good, you could ask them to request an equity / market review from HR.

You can also do some digging yourself with what you find online. Just please note that I’ve found much of the free online salary info to be inflated and should be taken with a grain of salt. I typically find around 5-6 numbers then average them (and take into account regional impacts).

Knowing what your peers earn is a good starting point to having a conversation. I would suggest reframing it not in terms of time with the company but in terms of responsibilities and value that you bring to the organization.

With that in mind a couple of questions:
How long have you been with the company and when was your last merit increase?
Have you had any performance reviews and how did they go?
Did those reviews lead to any increases?

If not or if you feel that they were unfair, prepare your talking points for your boss to make it easier for him to give you that increase.
What were your metrics? Show that you achieve them.
What are extracurriculars that you are involved in at the organization? If you participate in erg's or mentorship or anything that brings extra value beyond your written and expected job description, talk about that.

If you don't have any of those points available, go into this meeting to talk to your boss about what does success look like for me 6 months down the line. Write those down and confirm them after the meeting with an email thanking them for the direction given. Crush those goals and in 6 months come back and say, hey these are the things that we talked about, and I have not only done them but excelled in those areas. At that point if they cannot/do not give you an increase, you know where you stand and can make decisions from there.

Sorry for the formatting I was doing voice to text but I hope you get the idea feel free to message me for further discussion.

I know - the company is very prickly about sharing compensation info and they’re payroll gets approved by my director

I would definitely ask about this lol being someone that processes payroll and everything (tax and finance related) that goes along with that, as well as other duties, I noticed an office admin we hired 12/2021 has had her pay increase by 8% meanwhile I’ve worked here and progressed since 6/2020 and have only gotten 8%. That’s including two general increases

Raises some questions imo

What would you do?

Your teammate with the same title and pay as you is at your desk all the time for help. I'm definitely open to helping - but sometimes "help" is basically the whole job - it feels like I'm doing both jobs lol and it almost feels unfair that we both get paid the same or very close (Colorado, so pay transparency). The teammate has been with the company for longer than me.
