There isn’t a set amount. It’ll be different for everyone. I was an am for three months before being promoted to sup. At that level, the big things I look for on my team are (in order of importance): 1) confidence 2) ability to lead projects independently 3) think about the bigger picture/ripple effects of different decisions and 4) think about how everything ladders up to the strategy. Of course you also want to show standard good employee behavior too: reliability, kindness, team player, etc!

The higher you get, the more important 4 is. But I think a lot of people at your level assume that’s the #1 thing their boss is looking for, and it’s usually not the case, because that’s more on director-level roles and above. (Might be an exception for a smaller shop though with fewer levels!) Also, any time you can show that you e helped grow the biz, that’s huge! But that’s also def not something that’s expected at this level.
Along these same lines I’m curious what tips you all have for being promoted from Sr AM to Account Sup
There will be a lot of subjectivity to the answers you get on this one as there are a ton of variables. To stay objective, get the role descriptions for both roles and the ensure you can point to examples of you consistently nailing the responsibilities of the current role as well as good progress (say 50%) of the responsibilities of the next role.
Promotions are a two-way thing. Your manager promotes you and you promote yourself. But, they typically happen when you’re already doing the next job at some level of proficiency.
Also, start understanding how the agency makes money and how profitable your account is, including how the scope works on your business. You’ll need to know there’s available budget to give you a raise and timing is everything. 😉
