Mentor
I left after being somewhere less than 6 months and just emphasized how much of a personal decision it was
This happens more than you may think. You were already on the job hunt so it's not that surprising that another offer came through. Emphasize that it's you, not them. It's an opportunity too good to pass up but you hope your paths cross again. And try to give notice after January 1 to give them time to find a replacement. Congratulations!
Just say you don’t think it was the right fit
I think it all depends on your new jobs start date. You need to give at least a 2 weeks notice obviously, but if you do it before the holidays you’re kinda screwing them over because there really isn’t time to find someone. So I would say after the holidays if the new job allows it.
Wait until after the holidays. Don’t feel bad. Say that you were recruited with an awesome offer (the truth). You can also frame it as, “dear boss, what should I do? I’m torn. You guys have been great. This is an amazing offer.”
I take your point, BCC1, about not being old school, but since you’ve only been at this place for a short while, your boss is not likely to be as objective/mentoring as someone who you’d worked with for a long time. They are also probably going to pissed at you, so less able to think about your interests. Finally, asking the question kind of obliges you to live with their answer; and if they say stay but you decide to go, you are likely to piss them off even more. Not an easy situation, but you’ll feel great once it’s done. Congrats on such a great sounding new opportunity.
