Hey friends. Newbie here. I need some thoughts and perspective. So I work for this small, locally owned company. I’ve been here just over a year and I’m already wanting to quit. Why? My boss uses the “f word” every second word that comes out of his mouth, he calls everyone an “effing moron”, his 41 year old kid comes to the office daily and spews conspiracy theories, and I simply can’t live off the low wage I’m being paid. We have no HR at work as there’s only five of us in the office. CIC

You’re already doing the right thing. Dust off your resume, get new skills, look for a new role.

Meanwhile, you need to do the job you’re being paid to do.

Highly unprofessional brush up your resume and look for a better work environment. Do your due diligence by researching the company, culture , glass door reviews and fisbowl. Look for corporate environment versus small business, family owned or startups. Informational interviews can help
find out about roles and company culture

Agree with the above and you’re taking the right steps. One additional thought - if you haven’t already, sharing your resume with temp agencies can be helpful. YMMV (depending on region, industry, agency, etc), but they can be a great way to get your foot in the door. In my personal career, twice I’ve gotten full time jobs as a result of temp placements.

So, with no HR, we don’t even fire people who refuse to do their job. I’m finding it highly triggering lately to my already existing anxiety issues. My MIL got me this job and I feel horrible for wanting to leave the place, but it’s just…bad. I don’t feel like I can even approach the business owner about his own language, anxious behaviour, name calling without something happening.

What would you do in this situation? I have begun to look for other jobs, but the job market where I live is pretty slim pickings🥲

I accepted a $115K base salary, 13% bonus, 10k sign on bonus (scientist supervisor) job and two weeks later, got a $135K base, 17% bonus, and 15K sign on bonus (Senior scientist role) offer from another company. Should I accept the new offer ? How do I tell the previous company about this? Also, I’ve already negotiated with the first company and the $115K base is the negotiated salary. I really do not prefer one company over the other. They’re both great! I’m very confused here. TIA🙏

Me and my SO don’t live together. I visit her once during the week and generally spend weekends with her. What night I go during the week sometimes varies and sometimes I make plans on the weekend where I stay home. Sometimes she gets confused on what nights I’m gonna be there and not be there and when I tell her I’m not coming she acts like she’s sad and disappointed and I feel bad like I need to go pack a bag and go see her that night instead of when I planned. She says she’s not mad or sad.

I wanted to share my interview experience at Systems Evolution (SEI) here. A very time consuming interview process with an interesting vibe. Not good or not bad vibe, but a bit unique.

My biggest complaint is after 6 1-hour interviews, I received a generic "not moving forward" email. That is shameful by every company, but especially a small company that prides itself on transparency, culture, and an ownership model. SEI – Systems Evolution Inc
