Hey friends, what do you suggest an aspiring writer reads (novels, magazines, etc) and do you have any specific suggestions? Cheers

Read anything. Including comics, labels and whatever with words on them.

The discworld novels by Terry Pratchett.
Anything by Neil gaiman.

All of the above. Reading makes you a better writer.

Reading is important, so read everything. But also spend as much time writing. When I was in ad school, I was amazed at how little time most aspiring writers actually spent writing. Write ads, poems, songs, stories, or even just write about the things you see along your commute to work. It will help your writing tremendously.

And read Joseph Heller

The Economist-It’s an advanced writing course every week.
And George Orwell.

Advice on dealing with criticism of your writing? I write, my supervisor rewrites it, then her supervisor rewrites that. By the time it gets back to me, I just want to go with what the last person came up with because it's so much better than what I wrote, and I'm so weary of the repeated exercise. The process is taking the joy out of writing and negatively affects how I feel about the writing I do outside of work for mere enjoyment.

What should a Jr Copywriter's book look like?

I am currently working at my first job straight out of uni. And I have been here for almost a year now. As it turns out, there isn't much that I did here that can be put on my portfolio--just random SM posts, banners, emailers, etc.

For my next job, is it okay to still have only spec campaigns?

What do you do when you have an AD partner that isn’t conceptual? Normal? Wonderful designer, but when it comes to the big ideas it constantly falls onto me...(1/2)

Any copywriters here ever considered writing a novel?

Am I particularly uptight, or is writing meant to be done alone, without a partner talking to you? With past partners, we chat through script notes and then I go off to execute. Current partner likes to sit and chat as I write. To me, writing is crafting a conversation. So I can’t talk to you and simultaneously talk to this audience. Of course I can just say “I’m gonna go write.” But since we’re both CD level, I’m like…is this his first rodeo? Maybe other writers are different though.

Be honest.

Are you secretly jealous of other copywriters who are also published book authors (if you aren’t one yourself)?

Ok. Thoughts on non traditional resumes? Like one with a Wizard of Oz theme, for example? The “heart” is one section, “brain” is another, “courage” is another? For GCD level. Yay or nay?

I have a prospective copywriting project that’s writing the copy for a physical product (a gift box for a brand) and I’m wondering if anyone has thoughts on how’d they approach quoting their fee. Would you scope up a number of hours you think you’d take and then tell them your day rate or would you ask for a flat fee? Or maybe something else? Appreciate any thoughts!

We’re looking to hire an internal content writer for website and social media content, and are looking for someone with 2-4 years experience. I’ve been reading back and forth if someone with this experience would already be considered “senior” versus “junior” versus mid/level? I’m not specifically looking for industry experience, as much as type of writing - blogs, SEO content for website enhancement, and social. We’re trying to the right title, plus it’d be remote full time.

Clients that write well and want to outdo your entire copy during revisions: Is it fine to just slightly tweak their copy and call it a day? Trying to gauge if they want to see their copy come out victorious a prevail as a final… or actually merged and elevated with my own creative spin (as intended)
