Hey geniuses, financial modelling question: how do you account for the risk of fines in an excel business case model? For example if your project would eliminate a 10% risk each year of being fined $1m. Do I model it as a $1m P&L benefit a year? $100k? Something else? Thanks!

(Probability of being fined $1m * $1m) - ((P[fined $1m] - 10%) * $1m) = expected benefit of implementing solution relative to baseline expectation

If your project has a 100% chance of eliminating 10% risk of being fined $1m, then yes 100k benefit. This would make sense if your whole model is meant just to improve fines. But if this is just a potential side benefit, then I’d factor in the likelihood of the reduction as well (for example: 75% chance of reducing 10% of fines would net you a 75k benefit on average instead of $100k)

Are all years independent from each other? If yes, $100k per year. If not (e.g., without the project, if you get fined in year 1 you’re much less likely to get fined in year 2) then the benefit of the project is no longer $100 per year.

Right AP1, if you’re projecting and discounting it back then you could measure the delta on company value instead of a per annum basis. 100k in a single period of a dcf might not be a compelling business case though.

Serious billing question - if during the course of the day, you first receive an email from Client A at say 11:10am and you read it, you then respond to it at 12:20pm. You get another email at 2pm from Client A and respond immediately. The next email comes in at 4pm, you read it and respond only at 4:30pm. None of the email responses take more than 3-5mins. You are working on matters for other clients at all other times during the day. How much are you billing for Client A?

Junior partner at a specialist boutique consulting firm (compete w/ MBB primarily in our verticals) with prior experience in PE on both deals and ops side, and corp dev. My career here is pretty stable and money is good enough without killing myself (500k+ cash) but I miss being an investor vs an advisor.

Is there any path back to GE/PE at this stage? My gut says no unless it's a firm where I have a client relationship and I get lucky but hard to broach the subject given dynamics. Any advice?

What’s the best way to compare lots of data with time stamps? I.e. you’re trying to evaluate the time different steps in a process take for multiple line items (10000 rows)

Current approach I’m doing is to subtract the times (in hh.mm.ss) from each other to get the duration of each step. Not sure if there’s an excel time stamp function that would make this easier. It’s not working well for times that were late PM and bleed into early next day AM.

Hi team i have a bit of doubt.
I have an excel sheet where column A is the order numbers. I want to add comments in column G.
There are many repetitions in order numbers but they are all sorted in ascending so all the repetitions are below one another.

If i have a comment, how can i automatically paste that same comment in all the repetitions of that order numbers if i write it in the 1st instance.

Thanks in advance
