Hey guys, I have trouble taking vacation time. At my level, people are expected to be available for projects and not take a vacation when staffed. As a consequence, I end up with a week or so of CONTD

Why would you want to work somewhere that doesn’t even really give you a chance to utilize your earned vacation or discourages it. F-that. ✌️

like

Do your work, plan your vacations, communicate any necessary coverage while you’ll be gone, then unplug and enjoy your vacation. Repeat this as often as possible. And +1 to A1’s comment

like

Never heard of an expectation to not take vacation while staffed. Who has expressed that expectation (toxic manager perhaps?) or is it self-imposed?

like

Do not ASK if you can take vacation. TELL your team / project that you are out from X to X. As long as you communicate in advance it's fine. If you get dinged for it oh well there's more important things in life.

like

Totally this. I schedule my vacation, and try to make sure it is not during a go live or super hectic time, and then I tell them when it will be.

OP, whomever told this is either trying to intimidate you or doesn't know the policy. You are allowed to take vacation while on a project. Just give enough time to leadership, ensure that there's someone that will do your work while you're out and make sure that you document everything so no one is bugging you while you're out. We're not saving lives here, so go ahead and plan some time off.

like

If vacations are planned ahead, you should pretty reasonably be able to tell any new staffing opportunity that comes up: “I have a week off the second week in April - will that work?” The answer at that point is either, “it’ll be an issue, thanks for letting me know, I’ll staff someone else” or, “sure, we can work with that.” With rare exceptions, any other response is unreasonable.

like

Always take all of your vacation.

Said this on another similar post...do not ASK for vacation time unless it’s really last-minute. If your project can’t do without you for a week or so, that’s a PM problem. You earn vacation days just like you earn your paycheck. It’s a benefit and you’re entitled to use it when you need to. Think of it this way: if you get in a sudden accident and are hospitalized for a week, your project team will figure out how to get the work done, right? So if you give them some advance notice there’s no reason they can’t do the same. All work and no play...well, you know the rest...

like

Dude you’re a senior consultant. You’ve got at least 2 levels to go before you’re actually critical to a project. Take the damn time off

like

Dude/Dudette, just go on vacation two weeks from now.

Whomever told you this is a POS. Don’t worry, the bad ones eventually get sniffed out.

Also, not uncommon that managers prey on susceptible younger consults to life a large workload. Happened to me in a variety of companies for years.

like

Lost vacation time every year. I have no trouble planning my vacation days 3-6 months in advance but I feel like I will be dinged for taking them. How do you guys do it? And ensure nobody questions your commitment ?

What firm? If it's Deloitte I can tell you that "expectation" is all in your head

At your level, you’re replaceable. Almost everyone is. As long as your team has enough notice they can backfill for the time you’re away...

OP must work at Deloitte. Always seemed to be the case when I was there

What are most company standards for vacation time and PTO for small companies? We do 10 days after 1 yr, 15 days after 2yrs 15days after 5yrs and 20 days after 10yrs. PTO is accrued monthly after your first 90 days. 40-45 hrs. average is full time, 30-35 hrs. average is part-time. Does this sound reasonable?

Do any firms give you “billable time” equivalent for taking vacation or time off? I think it’s kinda scammy that firms offer “unlimited pto” but still expect you to meet your hours without giving any hours equivalent for that PTO time you took. In reality, you’re not really taking PAID time off because you’ll have to make up those hours at some point in the year anyway.

Pros and cons doing a HDHP with HSA vs. regular PPO? Cost wise, I’m spending $18/month on the PPO and $20 copays per visit (I only usually do my physical and maybe 1-2 specialist visits). With the HDHP, I’d pay $0/month, would have to pay for each appointment given after $3000 deductible, but my company contributes $900 to my HSA. It estimates I’d pay $90/yr with the HDHP as I’d use the $900 to cover the costs vs. $345 with the PPO. I always see HSA emphasized here so confused what route to go
