McK (and MBB in general) is a bit player in the tech space.
If you want a tech consulting role, I'd go for a boutique or one of the big dogs like ACN or Deloitte.
I generally agree with Microsoft. I came over with ~6 years of Accenture experience. BCG does do a solid job with the tech strat, good job with MVPs and POCS. We just aren’t doing the large scale SI work, even though we might get there in 5-10 years.
The one thing I’m not sold on for BCG tech is our attempts to layout and PMO a large tech implementation for Acn/D to implement. Even if our plan is PERFECT I know Acn/D will throw the plan out - I know if I was still at Acn as a Dev/Solution Arch lead I would raise absolute hell about being tossed a plan that I had no input in.
Not the first place I think of.
So bad? 🤦♂️
If you have a CS degree and are good in coding, just go to a tech company or FAANG
RI - did you specialize in cyber? If you don’t at least have a few resume bulletpoints about that it will likely be hard
OP, I left McK for FAANG after leading a tech team building solutions for both the firm and clients. Pro/Con list below...
Pros:
People there are *really* intelligent on the whole. it's rare to come across someone who isn't great at what they do.
Coaching/Leadership growth is 2nd to none, they invest in people.
Problems are really interesting, big meaty issues to solve are everywhere.
Mind-blowing benefits.
Cons:
McK is not a tech firm. No way around it, no one in tech thinks of McK as a breeding ground for tech talent bc it just isn't.
Reorgs in tech every 6 months bc there is no clear vision. You're considered a "diverse hire" (eg: not an MBA) which is comical.
Unless you're working on an internal project, you'll never see anything through to completion. McK doesn't do implementation so you won't ever get to production. Oh, and don't join an internal team bc they are treated like 2nd class citizens.
All in, I enjoyed my time there, but I would never consider it a stepping stone for a better *tech* role. You will grow, and be guided through that growth period like no where else, but remember it's a consultancy, and not a tech consultancy. If you want your career to be in tech however, join a tech company, even if FAANG isn't in the cards for you yet.
