Former FAANG employee here. Re 1), I would not go into consulting to boost my overall profile. Business schools value FAANG experience too and you’d theoretically have a clearer story to convey in your application.

Hmm, fair enough, but the industry for my role at McKinsey would be in line with my work at FAANG so it would carry the story in my case. I do believe given my engineering background coupled with an MBB experience certain schools would view my profile as a more holistic one. I don’t plan on working big corporate post mba, so would work with the story line, I believe.

Why do you want an MBA?? Usually you will have to return to the firm for 1-2 years after your MBA. There are plenty of reasons to get an MBA and MBB experience, but to focus on your own venture doesn’t rank highly on the list

The MBA / MBB brand will carry a lot of weight in my social / professional network long term, particularly in regions outside the US. I’m an international student here and long run see the value in these brand names / experiences. Personal ventures pan out beyond just starting a company; could be investments, partnerships, etc, that’s where I feel like these two experiences can add value which I might be shortsighted right now to not appreciate

Ask consultants you trust if it's really what you're looking for. I left tech because I always had a crush on BCG. I really dislike it and an actively interviewing to go back to tech.

Sameeeee - business school confused me. I played myself. I am trying actively to leave consulting

I don’t think analyst level consulting skills will help you with a venture. You’re a slide monkey at that stage. MBAs are probably not going to care if you have McKinsey in addition to FAANG. Only 2-3 classes in my MBA would help much with starting a business. If that’s what you want to do put your 2 years and your MBA money into starting the business and playing with startup incubators.

like

If you want to focus on your own venture, I'd do MBB for two years, but not get the MBA after because, in the venture world, most don't really care about that.

I don't know why people are recommending against the MBA, isn't there value in both the education and network you build? One of the best execs in the startup space I've worked with went eng undergrad MIT > eng MS MIT > McKinsey > MBA Stanford. His business acumen, ability to network for funding, and personal eye for finding and grooming "diamond in the rough" tech leaders has led him to start/buy and scale multiple successful startups which were later acquired by both megacorps and PE, some which in markets that didn't exist at the time, others up against more well-established players that he beat (including one of his previous ventures).

Thanks TA1; I have similar background, and that’s the trajectory I was envisioning exactly. I see the long term benefits of MBA / MBB experiences because of the various aspects of ventures, be it investment, startups or companies, particularly in international circles. These common threads do a lot.

If you think you’d be competitive at Stanford GSB one way or the other, try to do that. Loads of people leave the GSB for entrepreneurship. You build a great network in the venture world there.

Where do you live? In Germany you can always choose to do a PhD/MBA and you are free to leave afterwards, no need to come back for another 1-2 yrs.

I’m based in the US, 1 year is fine but I wouldn’t want 2 or more post mba at MBB; WLB lifestyle wouldn’t be worth it for me

Hi all! For an experienced hire as a Human Capital Consultant at Deloitte, what should I expect the salary/sign-on bonus to be at a MCOL city? I have approx. 3.5 YOE (non-consulting), MBA and MS degree (non target school) and also SHRM certified (which is probably irrelevant for the role but thought I’d share anyways). Already did my research but the range is kind of all over the place for experienced hires so just want to have a ballpark. Thanks!

I’m sponsored from Deloitte at my mba program and I’m planning to rerecruit for MBB. Some of my classmates and others in the program really question why I would do this. I personally did a lot of research into comp and it seems like MBB definitely would exceed in just a few years after mba. I guess just looking for opinions, is this an irresponsible plan? Or do you guys think getting MBB is def worth giving up my sponsorship

Hey all - I got an awesome new job Accenture in the applied intelligence practice as a consultant. I am also doing my MBA part time at a T15 school. The MBA exit salary is on average 150k for consultants in my program. I was hoping that when I finish my MBA, I would be able to ask for a raise to match my salary to what those MBA folks normally get. Is there a way for me to request that in ACN?
