Have enough liquid savings to support yourself for 6 months. Don’t start networking to get work and expect work — do it to let people know what you’re up to and then earnestly discover what they might need. Build relationships, and you’ll build the business. Treat it like a business - name it, file your LLC papers, and set up business banking with a credit card and line of business credit. Get a business office address - don’t use your home or a PO Box. Refer other freelancers to projects they might be better suited for (than you). Don’t sign up with recruiters or talent agencies for projects — the work only pays pennies. Hire a business attorney and get a standard business contract drawn up to use with all clients. That’s my advice... to start.
Thank you! One item I’m sorting out right now is health insurance (it’s a doozy!). But have LLC, and the legal foundation structured already. As well as the business credit. And I’m seeking out networking opportunities for 2019 as we speak. I greatly appreciate your input!
Always Be Opening. In other words, keep meeting new people who might be clients. Events are cool, but better are a) dropping a note or share about a client’s social post and b) pick up the phone to say “Hey I’m new and wanted to introduce myself, ask what you guys need/pain points etc. picking up the phone may sound hairy but is easy. “I’ll be in your area on Tuesday, do you have 5 mins I can stop and say hello and bring you a coffee.”
Also drink plenty of liquids
CD1 nailed it. Great advice! Best to you in 2019!
