Hey I am interviewing for a Sr Data Scientist role at a growing ( well funded) pretty secure startup. Interview process so far has been; recruiter interview, technical interview with scientist, interview with hiring manager; and then I was invited to their virtual on-site which included a “short” presentation ( up to a half hour!) and 5 more one-on-one interviews. I wasn’t told anything specific about the one-on-ones - but they all ended up including technical whiteboard coding. Is that normal?

I just finished a cycle of interviews and am moving on to a start up. All of the companies I interviewed with had wildly different processes, but all included only one technical phase this time around. Multiple technical stages seems like overkill, but not unheard of. When I was interviewing for the job I am now leaving I had a couple that were 1:1 phone technicals followed by multiple panel technicals with the various teams the role would interface with. My personal style when hiring candidates is a 4 hour asynchronous case study on a real problem my team faced (past, already solved problem) and the synchronous technical is a deep dive into projects they've worked on before. I've found white board style interviews to be utterly useless at evaluating candidates.

That would have thrown me too. I am autistic so if I don't know what to prepare for I interview very poorly.

Oh my god, that's insane. I'm surprised you survived. I feel like that's very extra for your role/the company...Hey at least the people you'll be working with will be talented.

Not exactly normal but a lot of places get very heavy on the technical questions. Hope things work out after all that.

That’s a lot! I’ve heard of processes that arduous but most aren’t. On average I’ve done the phone screens (2+), a technical exercise, and then on-site with 3-5 sessions half of which are typically technical. What you’ve gone through is much more intense. I have done an interview like yours and when it came to negotiate offer I had my offer pulled for asking for more PTO, what a waste of my very valuable time.

Update: They asked for another interview. Non technical, conversation with the director of data science. I don’t really mind, talking to him. It’s just ... I was really expecting to get a yay- or -nay at this point.

Let’s pretend we’re holding companies. I’ll start: No, we can’t hire an extra writer even though you’re clocking 70+ hours a week. BTW, our contract with your client caps billable hours per employee because they know we don’t pay overtime. Here’s a non-billable code you should start using for the rest of the year.
