Toastmasters! It’s for public speaking but it helps you communicate clearly and confidently.

Any recommendation other than Toastmasters. With all the traveling I do, I’m not able to attend meetings consistently.

I’m great at public speaking. It’s more the technical language thing. I’m an engineer and I work in finance so I typically use simpler words.

Is it trying to condense complex ideas and explain them as directly and simply as possible? That is definitely a learned skill. Probably your greatest asset is your boss - set up time with her and ask for direct honest feedback. When you are going in front of a client or senior leader, prep with her, another trusted team member or at the very least record yourself. Write out notes or a script if you have to and practice it. The most common issues I see in consulting communication is people 1) provide too much detail, 2) speak too long (no breaks or pausing asking for questions or other input), 3) use technical terms that distract from main point, and 4) forget their audience. Both orally and in writing, using the simplist, most common language is the best way to provide concise info that people can easily process. If you can say something in a sentence rather than a sonnet, do it. If you can use a one syllable word, do it. Hope this was on the mark! Communication (speaking and writing) is one skill everyone can always improve.

What do you see as the issue? Are you nervous, do you not “think on your feet” adequately, is your vocabulary not mature enough, is there a language barrier? These are all different issues that can be addressed in different ways.

What do you think that the education system needs to do, to get young people to be better prepared with challenges in life? For example, I grew up in Malaysia, national secondary schools had home science lessons, where we learnt from ironing to cooking to carpentry to sewing to plumbing to soldering on a circuit board where we did individually or in teams. To me, these skills altogether prepped me with a lifelong ‘Swiss Army knife’! Anyone with children with ideas?

Kind of a different question ... for those who made the move to PE, any questions or things you wish you would’ve asked / known when you were interviewing that you know now working in the role?

Not proud of it, but I was hooking up with a co-worker/friend pre-COVID. I left the state when wfh started and we still talk every day, but nothing romantic. He made it clear at the beginning that he didn’t want to date because we’re co-workers. Stung a bit when I went on a dating app this morning and saw his profile. The rational part of me knows we’re only ever going to be buddies and that if he actually wanted me, then he’d make something happen. Looking for advice on how to get over this.
