Hey I work from home in Montana but am based out of New York office. Just looked at my paycheck and both states are taking out state taxes. Do I really have to pay both. Anybody have experience with this

NY presumes that you work all your time in NY. When you do your taxes you have to calculate your days out of state to figure out what you actually owe for your return.

like

When you do your taxes it will ask you how long you resided in New York this year. But 0 and you should get some returned.

like

I believe you should only be taxed based on the physical location

Following this. I work from home in New York but office is in California. Getting taxed twice as well.

Do you even have anything left on your paycheck?

Worked in WA for more than a year and office is in nyc. Here’s what I did: made sure my permanent address was my WA address, always billed hours and set location WA. Kept track of days in/out of WA. I work for a consulting firm that provides tax support as well so I think that is why our system was able to not take out nyc taxes whenever I billed to WA. When I filed taxes, spent like 10 days in nyc so did like that % as earned income to nyc and paid taxes to the state for that amount. Also, I refuse to overpay taxes to ny state for fear they won’t give it back and would rather have an over allocation to federal taxes and use that refund at year end to pay ny state if sh*t hits the fan and they want more or change tax code which they were looking at doing. Also, filed my taxes through TurboTax since I used to file returns in college. Disclaimer: not a CPA or professional, just what I did because I hate nyc taxes 🤷🏼‍♀️ making me poor

Never lived in New York and have only been there once for an interview also. For added context

Ditto on this…and also would recommend checking your historical timesheets just to ensure that the hours you record/enter have where you reside listed

To which state does the firm pay unemployment insurance / SUI? Both?

I think you can be taxed based on home location and work location. I recommend reaching out to the payroll and tax team. And errors could be rectified in annual tax filings.

Yes, you need to write a letter to both states, stating which state you actually live in, how much you are paying on taxes there, and request a refund.

(1/2) I started a new job less than a month ago at a large firm with a significant pay increase. I work remotely- which is a special arrangement. They paid for my travel to their headquarters for in-person training. After interacting with my manager and some of the attorneys, I feel like I made a mistake. Manager is demeaning and rude. A bunch of the attorneys dropped not so subtle hints that people who work from home are causing all kinds of problems. I don’t know what to do.

Do you think wfh makes consulting better or worse? I think it’s nice without the fatigue from traveling but the lost of efficiency and the number of calls I need to be on every day (sometimes 8+ hrs) makes me crazy.

Hi everyone! I am new to Fishbowl - didn't even know this is a thing! I am looking for a Recruiter - fast paced, energetic, personable, strategic, forward thinking, thorough and good at building relationships. Can be remote some of the time, but really needs to be local - Knox (outside of), TN. I would really like to have someone who has some accounting recruiting experience.

My school has seen combinations of f2f, hybrid, and remote teaching/learning throughout the first half of the school year. After the MLK holiday, our district is returning to traditional f2f teaching 100%. I have 4 band classes (1 beginning, 2 intermediate, & 1 advanced), and as far as content pacing is concerned, we’re 1 9-week grading period behind. Is it a far fetched goal to get my students where they need to be by the end of the school year? How would you handle a situation like this?

For those of you who spent a long time in big law (at least 10 years but more along the lines of 15+), when did you know it was time to do something else (maybe in the law, maybe not)? I don’t know if it’s wfh or just the work now, but I’m finding myself getting amazingly frustrated at things that barely bothered me before. I had an argument with opposing counsel last week and was seeing red for hours after that, and little things seem to bother me much much more than they would have before

So teachers have to go back to the classroom even though we are still remote. The justification is to "prepare for going f2f" but there's no date for that yet. Is the real reason because they don't trust us to do our jobs?

I recently accepted a job and its WFH (work from home) then supposed to meet in-office when it’s safe enough, but I’m not quite sure how to be disciplined enough to WFH. After speaking to my manager my position has changed to fully WFH…I turned down a different job because it was fully remote and I knew I couldn’t do the whole WFH full-time option cause I lack discipline. Any advice since I will not be full-time at home?
