Be honest about what you want. It’ll save everyone time if it’s not a good fit.
D1 research is not going to tell you the maximum amount a company is willing to pay for a position.
You can research the market all you want, positions have varying values and budgets for different t locations and companies. If you give away your salary expectation then they only have to meet that and if its less than their budgeting for the position you hosed yourself out of money.
Anchor high. “I’m happy in my current role and have a clear path to promotion. I’d leave for a fantastic role and comp is one of several key factors. My expectation is that my next role offers total compensation of at least $X” where x is either at/just above the high end of a known range for that role or your actual “make me leave” number.
I tell them. I don’t want to waste either of our time if we’re not aligned
Unless I actually have something specific in mind, I say I’d like to better understand the scope and responsibilities of the role to determine what I think is appropriate, but are they able to share the budgeted range — it at least gives me some time to research and at best gives me the leverage.
Multiple times they’ve just straight up told me the range. And it’s also because recruiters approached me — don’t think I need to do the all the homework on my end if they asked me for the call.

I love the idea of a "range", as if there's a limit to how much I'd be comfortable accepting.
Exactly, I dont know why people willingly lock themselves into a number when companies might be willing to pay more.
Anchor high.
Checkout Glassdoor to understand the salary range for the role. And aim for the upper end.
There are various schools of thought but personally I do not give a range. If you give a range they will just go for the low end. If you give a salary history they will just go up a bit from there.
Your salary is the few things your recruiter doesn't know about, giving it removes all your leverage you barely have to begin with.
I had an interview where the recruiter asked for my expectations I gave what i would want and she said that was higher then they pay. I said thank youjfor taking the time and moved on, why waste mutual time. I asked for ~100, she quoted me 65😂😂
flip mode squad - ask ‘em what the intended range for the role is
Be ready with this number before you talk to any recruiter and always leave room to negotiate and still land on your number

Recuirter was about to set me up for next rounds but i specifically told my expectations in the last 5 mins of conversation and we jointly decided to end the process on a good note :)
