I agree with you. I believe that if you explained it to them the way you have here, that that is an example of separation, not inclusion, I bet they would change this practice.

I would discuss it with the yearbook advisor; they probably simply don’t know.

I teach in a self contained class as well. Please bring this up as a concern to your administrators. It is very problematic and discriminatory. Your students need to be included with their non-disabled grade level peers. There could be additional yearbook pages for things that your class does, but they also need to be included with the rest of the population in alphabetical order.

Sadly, my SC students have always been on their own page

Have you ever had a discussion with anyone at school about it, or do you know that it would be shut down immediately by admin/anyone involved?

I also teach K-2 in my building. Depending on my class size I would at times have the students take photos with larger classes that they go to specials with. I have had 10-12 kids recently so I do my own class photo now. But their individual pictures should absolutely be with their grade level!! Not ok to separate them in the book.

There is a federal law regarding the LRE. Least restrictive environment. Plus the school is segregating your students they are to be with their peers.

Thank you all so much for your advice and equal level of concern over this issue! I don’t have notifications set up, so I just saw majority of your responses and apologize in my delay. Update: I emailed and talked with my principal and yearbook advisor, and it went really well!! I explained that due to privacy and law, my students needed to be included in the yearbook page with the class they have inclusion and specials times with. I also threw in the ever daunting “trying to avoid a potential lawsuit” line, and I think that helped as well. It was a quick easy fix, and they explained that they had just never been told before. So I’m glad I spoke up and was able to calmly educate them to avoid this in the future! Again, thank you all so much!

Anyone else an elementary specialist who gets called to help behavior kids, remove them from their classrooms if being unsafe and supervise them in a “safe room” type of setting? If so, how much of your own teaching are you missing in a typical day and what kinds of support is your district offering you? Right now, I am dealing with behavior kids for 1-4 hours daily (I’m the reading specialist). Almost non-existent support from the district. Just curious what it looked like in other places.
