Hey I'm a solo Attorney who does business law. Until now I've never litigated. However, it is something I would like to start doing. Does anyone have any advice on what to read or look to in order to be as prepared as possible. CA attorney if that helps. Thank you in advance.

The biggest thing to know is civ pro, you don’t want to miss any filing deadlines. Where are you located?

like

Yes, been there. We have a general practice because of that. Let’s connect, I think we can help each other out.

Also, get a good book on legal writing and one on writing in general. Good writing is half the battle.

Consider taking collection work. You can get small trials in that practice area and learn the basics

like

Agreed. Specifically, I’d suggest contacting a large collection firm about local counsel opportunities. Look for one that handles a lot of cases in your city/county, but is located elsewhere.

At least in consumer collections, the bulk of the cases seem to be filed by regional firms. So, for example, a collection firm based in Cincinnati OH is likely to handle cases all over the state of Ohio, as well as cases in neighboring states like Indiana and Kentucky. All the court filings are generated at the main office, but they use local counsel to handle the court appearances in areas where they lack a presence.

Even if the home office got a default judgment without having to make a court appearance, the defendants usually don’t pay. So they’re ordered to appear for judgment debtor examinations (or supplemental proceedings, or whatever they’re called in your jurisdiction). The firm typically needs a local attorney to cover those.

Does anyone buy EE bonds for income post retirement to help bridge the gap until SS kicks in? Obviously the return isn't great (3.5% ish if held 20 years) but if we are on track with normal investing/retirement/college savings with no major purchases planned any reason not to chip in a fixed amount monthly, knowing it will double in 20 years?

Any of you manage WFH / telecommute more than 50% of the time? When I was an associate, you hardly saw the principal/owner. Now that I’m 7 months into partnership, I just started a set up for WFH myself. It’s basic right now, but once fully set up, I don’t see a need to go to the office other than client meetings. But in my area of law (domestic relations/family), even in a pandemic, people love to just stop by. So that’s one of my concerns if I transition to WFH.
