Hey 👋 In House 🐟 - how did you learn to sound more "lawyerly" when talking to clients early in your legal career?

I don’t. We’re trained to talk like elitist morons so it needs to be untrained.

It’s an interesting question. Early on I tried to sound more lawyerly. I have spent the past 10 or so years trying to sound more “business.” I have found my business partners assume I am lawyerly enough- what they want is for me to understand their business priorities, financials, and strategy and how I can help them without droning on like a lawyer for hours.

Good luck!

this is brilliant advice, can you share this with law school professors and career departments 😂

helpful

Better to keep it simple. Some clients will understand the “lawyer talk”, others will act like they understand. With the latter case, there’s the potential for the client misunderstanding what you are trying to say to them.

How challenging is it to get a loan for small multi-family real estate (up to 4 units) in LA? I have heard that you need 50% down, and need to have between 12-24 months worth of mortgage payments in the bank. Is it also the same case for single family or easier?

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

Would moving from a firm to an employee relations position mean that I never secure an in-house employment law position? Or would such a move better position me to go in-house one day? I am having difficulty transitioning from a labor & employment firm to an in-house role, and so I am exploring alternatives while keeping in mind my future career trajectory.

I didn’t learn that much on the business side and I love reading, so seems like a good idea to relax while also preparing a bit.

I am 7 years out in a transactional practice (real estate) and have an opportunity to move in house at a regionally respected company from a midsize firm. I have WFH flexibility at my current firm but bill about 1850-1900 per year. It would be about a 25% paycut. I have also been offered partnership starting in 2022 if I stay - not entirely clear what that long term structure looks like (would have to develop a partially independent book in next 3-5 years). Am I crazy if I leave?

I interviewed with a big pharma company last week. They said 2 more rounds of interviews with offers in early to mid April so I assumed things were moving quick. Im coming from small firm, not in-house. If I haven’t heard from them by the end of the week is it safe to assume I didn’t make it to round 2? Or does in-house always move slowly?

My co-worker is so resentful and competitive because I was promoted over her last year which caused a demotion on her end. People in the company still go to her for things that should be for me but she rarely corrects them. Shes still involved in the company too in a way that allows her to know secrets that I should know about but never do. I technically am above her within the company but this is how things are. I just do my job and try to not let it bother me but it does. Any suggestions?

Have you had to change your start date after accepting an offer and how did it go? I told them I need to give 30 day notice and so I set my start date (incorrectly) assuming the background check and drug screen would take a few days to clear. However, the drug screen is now taking over a week and a half (still not finished, maybe tomorrow). Apparently things are much slower due to staffing issues and labs are backed up. It’s cutting into my 30 day notice significantly. Thoughts?
