I agree there are many factors driving wage imbalance. That having been said, my understanding is women are NOT paid the same for the same work. Part of that is due to factors in our control (eg negotiating harder) but I believe there are others that are not (eg senior men being more willing to advocate for young men)
If you read more on this youāll see that itās not gender discrimination in the workplace, but rather a long history of societal standards for women that donāt exist for men. E.g., itās expected that women are the ones who leave the workforce to raise families, women arenāt raised to necessarily negotiate and ask for a raise. Itās much more complex than simply gender discrimination in the workplace.
A mentor of mine (in industry) found out she was underpaid by 40% as compared to male when HR conducted a pay study. They eventually made up for the difference. Sure part of it was probably not being as pushy and she needed to be, but 40% is a huge gap.
My boyfriend and I had a pretty interesting discussion about this and he brought up what I thought was a valid point. While we both 100% acknowledge that a gender wage gap exists, many times the reason for its existence is pinned squarely on gender discrimination in the workplace...which may not always be true, right? It could be that women are less likely to ask for raises vs. men or women choose to leave the workplace to raise families etc. How true is it that women are paid less for the same work? Sure, on average women are paid less than men, but are they paid less for the same work? I realize that I donāt actually know whether or not this is true and I donāt have data to support it.
Anywho, any thoughts on all of this?
As google guy who got kicked out said, women are more likely to be interested in people vs. men in āthingsā. As a result, women gravitate to nursing, teaching, communications jobs vs. engineering, etc. itās a fact and correcting this is not likely to be the right solution.
I donāt have numbers off the top of my head, but if you read the book Lean In thereās some very interesting info on this. Wage gap exists for many reasons, some of them literally beginning from the way we treat men and women as children. I found it a fascinating read.
Letās also consider how fast and easy it is for men to be promoted vs women who are, if not more, qualified. This only increases the gender pay gap.
