seeing high performers get fed up and leave just as they were on the brink of career breakthrough. the one that stands out is leaving a meeting discussing RFP, partners gushing about a senior, then getting looped into an email thread of that same senior leaving the firm. they were fed up with being extended on a project with a douche manager. the alley of lost potential is filled with legends like these.

Good, not old then

Slleping with each other is risky but I'd venture a lot of us have done it

Stop thinking you NEED to jump clients - if you are on a single client and know them and are respected, it is far more valuable than changing clients every few months.

Looking back on the silly things I did in industry (became consultant late at 40), it was losing patience in certain roles when I could have maximized experiences and grown a bit more.

More advice from my first boss, a managing partner of global HR in an investment bank: 1. Compensation is not fair. Get over it. 2. Do not try to make 'friends' at work. Either you or the other person will end up managing or having to fire the other person. 3. Be nice to people on the way up. You never know who you will meet again on the way down.

Sleep with the client after an event held at the beach and then show up to with with her at the office the next morning wearing the same clothes as yesterday leaving a trail of sand everywhere you go. That was in the mid 90s... when this shit was real... :)

A few observations...

1) Prioritizing firm building (e.g. recruiting) over project work

2) Throwing the team under the bus to save face in front of the partners

3) Argue with the Manager over small things like logistics (hotels etc.)

4) Make phone calls to order lunch in the team room while the team is actively discussing project deliverables

Agreed to a couple weeks of work. In a contract. It’s remote, so not a lot of daily contact/feedback. Empty days waiting for edits/tweaks. Do I bill the “down” days?” I’ve checked in for next steps.

Today one if my students stuck their hands in toilet and before I could hand them a towel and get them to wash their hands they had wiped their hands all over my clothes. 🤦🏻‍♀️
