I try to identify themes in the reviews. If one person says it’s the worst place they ever worked and a bunch of other reviews say it was great, I’m more likely to believe that it’s a fine place to work. But if there are multiple reviews identifying poor leadership, poor pay/growth trajectory, long hours, etc I definitely view that as a confirmed statement of the company culture.
I generally trust the reviews but as with any review I take them with a grain of salt. There are always going to be people who make the worst of a good experience and vice versa. A lot of factors go into making a job enjoyable so I think the best you can do is read a variety of reviews and come to your own conclusions about the bigger picture you extrapolate from the various perspectives.
That’s a really good point! Thank you!
My old company use to incentivize us to write a good review on glass door. If you submitted to a HR a screen shot of your review you’d get an Amazon gift card. Take it with a grain of salt!
I look at the dates posted. Sometimes there is a single TERRIBLE review then you’ll see multiple 5 Star/perfect reviews all posted in a cluster the same month. I try to look for any repetitive themes that come up across reviews.
The Glassdoor reviews are reliable. Every company will have negative reviews but it’s the ones with the same habitual negative reviews over an extended period of time that I’d say you view as honest. I worked at a company #pr.business in Florida and the negative reviews precisely describe that company. @pr.business
