Hey Tax Bowl,

I currently have a sweet offer from a middle market public accounting firm 120k base with 5k sign on bonus and Deloitte coming in at 105k with 15k sign on bonus for an experience tax senior role. My experience has been mainly at small firms and middle market firms. My thoughts are if I go to Deloitte, I will have a better exit opportunity in the future but I will pretty much be signing my life away for the next two years. What are your thoughts?

Go with what you feel comfortable with and what culture you think you would best fit. Exit opportunities may be better at Deloitte, but maybe you won’t need or want an exit opportunity if it is the right fit. Congratulations on the new opportunities. You will do great with either opportunity.

like

Thank you Deloitte 1! The middle market firm will definitely fit my style more. Better work life balance, and I will have support from my old colleagues. At the end I think I have to settle for Deloitte as I will need that “big four experience” on my resume to give me a leg up when I apply for industry as that is my end game.

CR1 I have about 5 years of public experience.

From what you’re describing I would definitely choose the mid size firm. The pay difference is already substantial and the hours will likely be much more reasonable. And as far as exit opportunities go, having big 4 on your resume only gives you a very small leg up on exit opportunities. Anyone with a manager title from any public accounting firm will have good exit opportunities, and from there it will come down to how well you interview. You won’t be passed on if you wow an employer in an interview because you worked at a mid size firm instead of big 4.

likesmart

You basically get to the same place but faster with Deloitte given the difference comes up front. Brand recognition is better.

And in my experience at PWC , most teams work in their subsets so unless you’re in RE tax or something you probably will work in a more close knit setting than you expect at big 4.

DT +1 from me

Curious which middle market firm is offering $120k for a Senior. Is this a HCOL area?

If all you want is to get through the next few years and exit with a nice bump in salary I would go middle market. I hate to say it but… where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Definitely not worth it
