I personally chose not to, because i knew i would work full time hours and get part time pay. I just went back 3 weeks ago and have adjusted my hours in office (9-4) and typically work through lunch and then about an hour after he’s asleep. Not sure what LOS you’re in but i just didn’t feel like part time would actually be PT and would rather flex time. Also, i am the insurance carrier as we have better benefits than husband.
I’m doing 60% (3 days/wk) and very happy because it WORKS - I rarely open my computer on my off days, unless there is a super important call. But my group doesn’t really have a busy season (my old group did and I worked FT basically for a PT salary).
I tried 80%, condensed 4 day work week, and 40 hr work weeks year round (including busy season). With all of them, there was still never enough time to finish everything, and on my “reduced” schedules, there were weeks in busy season where I still hit 60 hrs bc something unexpected came up with the client. In my opinion, it’s not worth the pay cut. Flexibility and being able to work remotely are key. I now work 100% from home (still in PA), and I love it! No more commute or get ready for work time, and I am able to take my kids to preschool or a Gymboree class.
PWC 1 is right on the money. I just put in extra hours here and there. Late at night, early in the morning so I don’t slack !
Good job girls who figured it out! You are my role models! Let be more of your kind!
Do what works best for you, until it no longer does! That could be 2 days, 2 weeks or 2 years or never. But i would say talk through any perceived issues with your coach and relationship partner, OR Human Resources. I’ve had great support being back these few weeks with all of those folks
Pwc 3: you shouldn’t be required to take a pay cut to have flexibility. The firm is very flexible on this-it’s just a matter of being transparent and open with your teams. Working from home/flexibility doesn’t mean working less, it means working differently (and no im not HR HAHA)
@PWC3: luckily I did not have to take a pay cut, but if I had to in order to get the flexibility I wanted/needed, I would have in a heartbeat. I save about 2 hrs a day by not commuting to work or spending the same amount of time getting ready as I would if I was in the office. I also feel like I have less stress bc I don’t have to hear or deal with the office drama, and I’m not being judged for when I’m on/offline.
I have a 15 month old and recently went 80% which means 80% pay/vacation and supposedly 80% of expected hours and annual chargeable hours goal. Unfortunately it hasn’t been working out that way much but it’s only been a few months. I didn’t mind the pay cut bc I want more time at home with my daughter, so I’m hoping it improves.
I didn’t go part time either with my first one and now I’m back with the second... thinking that will still work full time.
@Senior Tax 1 - did you take a pay cut to have that flexibility and be able to work at home? Would you take a pay cut for it?
@senior tax 1: totally agree! The wfh thing is HUGE for me. It even allowed me to take a 45 min run this morning. First workout all of 2018 😂
I have been part time since my child was born about 2 1/2 years ago. I have worked various different %’s and my salary was reduced accordingly. You have to make sure your total client load is relative to your part time schedule. That being said, there are times where I had to work overtime and I wasn’t being paid OT or even close to what I was working (PT vs FT) but that is to be expected in this industry. However I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I have been able to be very flexible with my schedule, take my toddler to classes and special events during the week. Also I don’t expect people to contact me over the weekend unless there is a tight deadline coming up because they know I work part time, so that’s nice relaxed family time. To me the pay cut is worth the time I get to just hang out with my child and watch her grow and learn new things. Do what’s best for you
I went on a “flexible work arrangement” (reduced schedule) after my first child. After assuming a normalized amount of OT, at an 80% schedule, I worked about 40 hours per week. Couple of problems: 1) sarbanes oxley was being adopted so that was crazy and 2) I didn’t set appropriate boundaries and felt guilty leaving my team when I left the client site. I think it can work, but you need to set reasonable expectations and also set appropriate boundaries (and then stick to them).
