If you’re American I recommend you stay somewhere near Kensington. Americans (aka my friends and family, I’m American) seem to really enjoy it there because it looks like what you “expect” London to look like.
Anywhere central should be good. London has amazing public transport & if you’re around central, you’ll be able to take a bus or a tube and be from point A to B in under 30 minutes.

Recommended areas: King’s Cross, Mayfair, Marble Arch.
Those are expensive though.
If you’re looking for something a little more reasonable, Stratford has good connectivity. So does Canary Wharf.
I’d recommend staying out in AirBnBs in areas like Greenwich or Camden - quirky areas with real London vibes
20 mins by train from the west end is not “far”
