Hi all,
Has anyone here transitioned from an engineering role into consulting without first getting a MBA? How was your experience?

I’m an engineering consultant (>2YOE) in a very niche specialisation and I’m thinking of transitioning into consulting. In my current role, the work is really good but $ is not justified (once you hit that >2-4 YOE) compared to effort (hours+constant learning) you have to put in, liabilities, etc.

Any and all insights are appreciated! :)

A path I’ve seen successful for engineers to pivot to management consulting is-
1) go from engineering to engineering consulting (FEV/Porsche/Ricardo/P3)
2) spend a couple years there and switch to a management consulting firm that likes engineering consultants- like AlixPartners, Kearney, etc.
I personally know at least 3-4 people who went from an MS program to firms under bucket 1 and then to 2.

Congratulations!
Can you share what resources helped you the most? Also what was your profile when you entered AP?

Yes, I’m currently working on networking. At the moment , I’m trying to prep for case interviews and targeting engg related boutiques and some of the tier2 firms as well.

You should ask this question on a different bow, may be the consulting bowl

like

Thanks, I’ll post there as well!

You can DM me if you want - I started as an engineer, went to consulting, and then got my MBA after. Having a technical background gave me a big step up on my peers, and I didn't feel the MBA was worth it in the end.

like

Thanks! :)
I just sent you a DM.

Depends on what kind of consulting You want to do. Pure business/ strategy consulting is hard with only engineering background because of the lack of core finance and product/GM skillsets required.

Not saying can't be done but it's hard.

like

Agreed!
I’m not against getting MBA but just want to get into a role in the consulting and maybe then pursue it.
Right now, I’m trying to find roles in firms that have some engineering team to ease the transition.

💯 doable. I'm a scientist with no consulting or business experience and will be joining one of the MBB soon. BCG and McKinsey especially value diverse experiences, and other firms might as well. Check if there are any boutiques specializing in engineering firms. The trick is actually getting the interviews. You'll need to do a lot of networking as well as be prep for case interviews.

like

Just a lot of networking. And be ready to speak like you understand the business terminology. I read a lot of Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg Businessweek. You don't have to read them cover to cover, just pick one article per day, whichever you like. Just reading them will help you understand the concepts needed for consulting, and will also help you when you practice cases/ interview. Be ready for it to take time, especially coming from a non-traditional background. DM for more info

Are there alternative titles that you find more appropriate for 2022?

Hi all - would love some insight! About a year ago I switched to a client and product growth director role and am now thinking about doing my EMBA. Reason being, would want to eventually move into an executive or potentially head of growth role. The cost obviously is a huge factor but wondering if anyone has a perspective on whether it’s worth doing? I think at a certain point in a career it makes sense but curious if people think they are “still”worth such a crazy investment of money and time.
