You might be idealising the "clear purpose" of academia, through the eyes of an undergrad.
My partner has just come out of a 1 year thesis in chemistry / materials science, completely disenfranchised with the field. There's too much chasing funding, too hard to expense a few hundred dollars worth of materials for the whole year, the research is going nowhere, but no one can admit it because pivoting is a career and financial risk.
Plenty more people would be scientists and artists and performers and puppy cuddlers if there were actually economic demand for it.
That’s a good point, thanks for sharing your perspective.
Have you considered going the internal route? Transformation/comms for your consulting company's biotech division? Or applying for industry roles or transferring to that division as a consultant so that you get experience to make the leap to industry?
Agree. I think medical communications might be a great middle ground!
I really appreciate your help, I’ve been feeling demotivated and “trapped” on my career path for about 2 years, thinking I have already been working for 6 years in transformation/consulting, and there is no alternative for a corporate job that combines decent pay and a love for nature, science, etc.
If anyone has any suggestions I would be very grateful. Thank you ❤️
