Have you considered it’s not your academic qualifications that are causing the rejection?
@Shop Supervisor: will I get overtime pay for working OT?
Not to be snarky, but your post has quite a few grammatical errors. Assuming that your resume / cover letter have the same issue, this could be quite off-putting for recruiters.
*Grammar
Do not get a PhD to get a job ... It will actually make things worse.
Recruiters and hiring managers don't give a crap about university grades - unless very specific jobs or countries. They just check if you tick the boxes of the required qualifications.
Ask professionals in your field (via LinkedIn for example) to review your resume, your search and application tactics, and possibly your cover letter.
Focus on the right jobs for you instead of applying for a shit load of roles. In other words, customize your resume based on the role you apply for with the same key words as the job description.
Network, network, and never stop networking.
Finally, do not be hard on yourself. We all go through a lot of failures before one success.
^can speak from first hand experience that just because you have a PhD doesn't mean you'll just get a job. Usually just opens up some more opportunities, but ones that don't require it don't necessarily see it as a huge plus (in fact, some companies even get worried that if you have a PhD and you're applying for something that doesn't require it, that you'll leave very quickly and won't take the risk)
I believe there might be something different at play here - perhaps it's more in the presentation of your resume and application
Based on your initial post and the replies you've made to some of the above replies, I can tell you two things:
1. You probably don't have as strong of an academic background as think so humble yourself.
2. If your academic background is strong, you likely suck at interviews/your job....that can range from a skillset to a personality/behavioral issue, which I suspect you have a bit of both.
Doing a post-doc with 2 years of experience isn't going to change any of that...though it may help you feel better about yourself which seems to be what you are looking for.
Have you tried ChatGpt to draft your resume?
Will try
2 years is very little experience, 9/10 rejection rate is not unusual here in the real world (especially when a lot of very good candidates flooded the market after layoffs), almost no one cares about your academic credentials. Check your grammar and dial down your arrogance a bit.
When you say “rejected” do you mean you are not even making it to a screening call? It’s hard to give advice if I’m not totally sure what your situation is. Also, what type of jobs are you applying for? Your title just says “associate.” I don’t know anyone who a phd helped get a job they couldn’t have gotten with a masters besides my friend who works at NASA, because they were only looking for phd students.
Not OP but this has definitely been MY experience. Everyone says my resume looks fine but I'm not even getting to the screening call. Was laid off from my first job three months in, but haven't had much more luck with leaving it off the resume so I just keep it on. Currently working on creating as many projects as I can to pad it out.
I’m sure it’s your CV.
Try to draft it in this order and make sure you don’t mess up the grammar
-Personal Info (full name, contact details)
-A one liner showcasing what you have to offer and your interest
-Education (School, Course, Date)
-Technical Skills (Bulleted)
-Job experience (Date employed, Title, Company name and location, bulleted brief description of your responsibilities.)
-Trainings/Seminars/Certifications (Name, Date acquired)
-interpersonal Skills / Hobbies (bulleted)
-Reference (optional)
Hope this helps. Good luck!
Thank you
You're probably too good to work
Honestly, I'll bet you aren't matching your years of experience with that of the job requirements. A lot of companies don't actually care that much about your masters, in terms of experience. The Masters is a cherry on top, but if you're applying to jobs that require more than 2-3 years of experience, that is why you aren't getting interviews.
I learned that with mine. I came out of my program expecting everyone to want me, but I didn't really start getting a lot of interest until I had five years of experience after my masters. You are going to need to start with more entry level jobs to begin with most likely.
GPA is irrelevant after the first job. It’s not very important even for the first job if you’re going into tech. Interview skills and the ability to demonstrate your accomplishments and skills (the value you bring to the table) are really all that matters.
Getting rejected by 9/10 seems to be the standard now, no worries. Focus on the 1/10 remaining.
Could be experience or cv format. Can you please share your cv without all the PII info.
I'll try to help you make it better. Don't do PhD cuz PhD jobs are literally different. Most PhD jobs are research assistant not developers/QA or DevOps
10% acceptance rate is much higher than average what are you complaining about?
What roles are you applying for ? And what degrees do you have
Job interviews are about making friends with your future colleagues and demonstrating that you can do the job.
I wouldn’t be as mean as other people in this thread but I will say, qualifications get you an interview, but from that point they’re irrelevant.
Furthermore, 80% of my hires don’t have programming degrees. Some have something irrelevant and some have no degree at all.
Applying through job posting is hardest way to get a job.
90% of good jobs are through recruitment agencies
Wait, how?
I think mastering your skills and keeping ourselves up to date with new technologies and programming tactics on daily basis is upfront qualification rather than pursing higher studies unless you could afford in-terms of time and financial support.
All the best for your career.
Please can we share more on these technologies to best assist ourselves? I had a chat with a friend lately and he was advising that I change my title nomenclature to Application Support Engineer and speak more of technologies such as CRM & ERP’s at interviews instead. What’s your take and can we chat over this via any of the messengers?
