Apply for a fellowship if you can. It's an accelerator into leadership roles
Hi Taylor, I am in a similar situation looking to get into operations, strategy or business development in health care. Recent graduate with MBA in health care management. I have 10+ years exp but in a non-clinical dept. I am seriously considering a fellowship to gain this exposure. I also think networking and talking to people in the roles that you’re interested in is key. Feel free to DM me if you want to talk and share insights.
Bowl Leader
Hi, congratulations on completing the MHA as it’s a nice degree to have these days. When I completed my program, I did a 1 year administrative fellowship and found it beneficial. Generally at the end of the fellowship a lot of organizations want to bring you on, often in a leadership or some sort of quality improvement kind of role. I actually did a bit of a zag and my wife and I decided to relocate and I eventually found a consulting job with a analytics firm. That’s definitely not the preferred path as one of the key strengths of a fellowship is building a nice network.
I did have classmates with more extensive healthcare backgrounds and some immediately went into consulting and a few others went to work for a health plan. Personally I’m biased towards doing a fellowship if the opportunity is there, but it’s a personal decision. I hope that helps.
