Seeking advice: I’ve been working as an analyst at a PE company for 18months 4 days a week on a part time contract and I feel like they are under paying me. I’m earning 42.2K p.a They want me to go full time as I am graduating however I don’t know what the base salary for an analyst with 18 months experience would be. My friend who works as an analyst (with less experience than me) is earning 70K. Would love to get a sense of what I should be expecting / asking for when I go full time. Thanks!

How do you handle references for an analyst who's a wonderful person but not the best at their job?

“Perfect is the enemy of good” seems like great advice for not over analyzing, but counter intuitive for a litigation job where you have to be precise and accountable all the time. What do you think?

Why do we not fight the insurance industry’s justification of “fundamental research” for cutting bills...

I’m going to start adding “as required by lawyer ethics guidelines to ensure we do not commit malpractice by simply using previously cited legal authority without doing necessary research to make sure it is still good law and no new law has been established, or to find out whether there is any law more on point to this fact scenario” to every single research entry.

Rant over.

I’m still a pretty junior lawyer and am up against someone with about 2 decades of experience. This person has been using their seniority to make personal remarks and to try and bully me into messing up my case. What’s the best thing for me to do here? I’m trying my best not to stoop to his level because I don’t want to and think that it would just come across as being ‘disrespectful’ towards a senior

Expect to be getting an offer for in-house at a start up soon. Currently at a mid-size firm. Have decent book of business and managing several pending litigation matters. How much notice should I plan on giving? Two weeks does not seem like enough, and I want to do right by the firm (and colleagues) I’m leaving as they’ve always been good to me.

I am a 7 year litigation associate and so burnt out on it. I want to transition to in house, but have applying and not getting traction. My experience is mostly insurance defense/coverage, and most of the positions out there seem to be for tech or transactional work. I also come from smaller firms and a smaller school, so no big names behind me. All the recruiters I’ve talked to will only peg me as an insurance defense associate and won’t send me anything else. How do I get out of litigation?

How do you get better at handling discovery? I don’t mean drafting requests or responses or staying on top of deadlines. I mean handling all the little meet and confer disputes over narrowing scope, knowing what to push back on, knowing what to and what not to agree to in a protective order. I feel like I’m awful at it and I feel incompetent for asking so many questions about what’s okay, what we can agree to, etc. I’m fairly new and have been tasked with a lot of this lately. I feel lost.

I just received a good offer to move from ID to PI. The only thing is the firms main offices are in other cities in my state. In order to bring me on, they offered to create my office at their current office space in my city (currently only used to meet clients) and hire a paralegal to be with me. This is obviously super accommodating. My question is what do you think about me working by myself? A great way to avoid toxic office BS or kind of lonely? WWYD?

New third year litigation associate at a mid-size firm. My practice group is very small- me and two partners. They are extremely unresponsive and aren’t getting me nearly enough work to keep me busy. I know they have a ton of work because the firm sends emails showing everyone’s billables for the month, and they bill like crazy. Any advice on how to proceed, apart from just hounding both of them?

We have a status meeting with the whole litigation team and the partner (new) wants a written status report from each associate regarding current matters. That’s all good and well, but any suggestions on specific items I can include that would be most useful to him? The basics about deadlines and next action items I have, but I want him to know I’m dependable and want to make his transition seamless. What information that I might not be considering would accomplish that? Sorry for the word salad
