Hi all. I’m 24 and trying to determine the best allocation of investments into my 401k, Roth IRA, brokerage account, and crypto investments. I know it’s better in the long term to max out 401k and IRA first before investing elsewhere, but I wish to retire much earlier than 65 if possible. Was thinking it would be good to allocate funds to a brokerage account that can help me retire earlier, but I’m a newbie, any advice would be very much appreciated!! TIA!

at 24 yes, max the roth, see if your company offers roth 401k and max that out as well... You can diversify with pretax investments in 5 or 6 years, but bulk up your after tax contributions now.. Brokerages are great for additional savings, but aim for long term gains rather than short term for tax efficiency. There are tax managed funds that focus on reducing tax drag which is very important in a brokerage. Message me if you have any other questions

How are you suggesting Roth over traditional without knowing their tax rate?

That's all good, but pay off CC debt if you have it.

like

agreed. If you have CC debt, try to move it to a 0% Balance transfer account and stick with monthly payments that will have it paid off by the end of the promotional period. Stick the other money in retirement accounts

Max the target Roth retirement with index funds…play money goes crypto for short term gains

My boyfriend and I make 200K combined and live in NJ. We have $1000 in monthly car payments combined. That’s all we owe. Our credit scores are in the 800s. We have 50K to put down on a home. We have done the math and I know we can afford much more but he doesn’t want to buy more than a 400K home. I’m almost positive we can afford 500K and be more than ok. But then he starts to talk about how much kids cost and how we will be house poor and we won’t be able to afford kids. 🤔 Am I insane??

Say I want to do a major renovation on my house. Are there banks that would offer a loan (HEL or mortgage, don't care which) over 95% of the current appraised value of the house?

If we did it, we'd be adding a bedroom, bathroom, and garage, and we would be increasing square footage by about 75%. House currently worth around $400k with $260k left on the mortgage; future comps are worth about $650k. Best guess is it is a $200k renovation.

Can someone help me understand how backdoor Roth works in my situation?

I contribute the $19.5K max to a 401K each year. Would backdoor Roth be (A) the ability to roll $6K of that $19.5K into a Roth? or (B) an incremental $6K that I could contribute to a separate IRA then backdoor into a Roth?

Asked another way, does backdoor Roth allow me to actually contribute $25.5K each year, or does it just allow $6K of my $19.5K contribution to build in a Roth?

Thanks!

Home equity: $200k
Gross annual HHI: 234k.
401k: ~60k
Emergency: $12k
Savings: 20k
Debt: One low-interest car payment

We just spent 60k on a lot down payment with the dream of building in a few years.

We don’t budget at all. And we don’t do anything else with our money - like investing in the market.

We just went on in 3.5k family vacation and I feel so guilty about it.

Is there an easy/efficient way to figure out how much you've contributed to vs earned in your Roth accounts? I started contributing >20 years ago to my employer's Roth 401k and have rolled it over to a Roth IRA and moved it between multiple custodians, e.g. Fidelity, Vanguard, UBS, Personal Capital, etc. It is unclear to me how much I contributed vs how much I earned by investing it.

The purpose of doing this is I want to use $10K of it, but want to prove that the $10K is from my contribution.
